Steel City Hoops: Bridging the Gap in High School Basketball Coverage
High school basketball enthusiasts in Pittsburgh have reason to rejoice as Steel City Hoops has arrived, dedicated entirely to the coverage of local high school basketball. This new digital media organization aims to provide comprehensive news, scores, and highlights from the vibrant basketball scene in western Pennsylvania, filling a significant gap left by the recent closure of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
In May 2025, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ceased operations, creating a void in local sports journalism. Recognizing the need for a dedicated platform, Steel City Hoops launched in December 2025, bringing a wealth of information directly to basketball fans. Founded by Rob Kennedy, the initiative was born out of a successful acquisition of a similar organization, NEPA Hoops, which had already established a strong presence in northeast Pennsylvania. This move showcases the vision behind Steel City Hoops and the eagerness to extend coverage to the Pittsburgh area, a city that has long been home to Kennedy and the Hoop Group for 25 years.
From its inception, Steel City Hoops has embraced a dynamic online presence, utilizing platforms like Instagram, TikTok, X, and Facebook to broadcast highlights and engage with fans. Their newly launched website,
