Heritage Valley Health System Joins Forces with Allegheny Health Network in Landmark Affiliation

On July 1, 2026, a significant chapter unfolded in Western Pennsylvania's healthcare landscape as Heritage Valley Health System completed its affiliation with Allegheny Health Network (AHN). This momentous agreement, first announced in October 2025, has been approved by both state and federal regulators. This strategic union integrates two Heritage Valley hospitals—Heritage Valley Beaver and Heritage Valley Sewickley—into AHN’s expansive network, enriching healthcare services available to local communities.

The formal alignment will see the aforementioned hospitals rebranded as AHN Beaver Hospital – Heritage Valley and AHN Sewickley Hospital – Heritage Valley. This change is not merely cosmetic; it marks a pivotal expansion of AHN’s capacity to deliver essential healthcare services across the region, increasing the number of acute-care facilities to 16.

Regulatory approval underscores a commitment to ensuring ongoing access to high-quality healthcare for residents in the diverse communities served by Heritage Valley. Norm Mitry, president and CEO of Heritage Valley, expressed optimism regarding the affiliation, highlighting the preservation and enhancement of a tradition of care that has characterized the health system for over a century. 'This affiliation secures the future of Heritage Valley,' Mitry remarked, emphasizing the legacy of clinical excellence integral to the health system.

With the integration finalized, efforts will now concentrate on aligning clinical operations and capitalizing on the collaborative synergies between the two organizations. This integration aims to enhance patient experience while maintaining quality standards in healthcare delivery. Mark Sevco, president of AHN, reflected on the excitement of incorporating Heritage Valley’s skilled caregivers into the AHN family, stating, 'Their dedication in the Ohio River valley has been commendable, and we are eager to learn from them.'

Heritage Valley Health System employs approximately 3,000 individuals, including around 500 affiliated physicians, all of whom will now become part of the AHN workforce. Following the merger, AHN’s total employee count reaches about 27,000, further solidifying its role as a healthcare leader in the region.

As part of this partnership, approximately $285 million will be invested over the next decade to bolster Heritage Valley’s clinical services and upgrade its facilities and IT infrastructure. A notable early investment includes the implementation of the Epic electronic health record system throughout all Heritage Valley facilities, ensuring seamless coordination of care through integrated digital platforms.

The expanded network will extend care through 36 Heritage Valley physician offices and seven multi-specialty outpatient facilities across Beaver County and western Allegheny County. These facilities will provide a wide range of services, including primary care, express care, diagnostic imaging, physical rehabilitation, and women’s care.

For patients insured by Highmark Inc., which boasts thousands of members utilizing Heritage Valley’s services annually, this affiliation guarantees continued access to comprehensive care teams and facilities, fortifying the security and quality of their healthcare experience.

AHN and Highmark Health have historically invested heavily in improving healthcare access and quality across the region. Over the past decade, more than $2.5 billion has been funneled into building new healthcare facilities, expanding existing ones, and enhancing technologies and care programs. David Holmberg, CEO of Highmark Health, stated, 'Strategic collaborations are essential to maintaining affordable healthcare access. Heritage Valley Health System aligns perfectly with our mission and vision for transformative healthcare solutions.'

This affiliation reflects a broader strategy to redefine healthcare experiences, meeting the ever-evolving needs of communities. As Heritage Valley embraces this new era with AHN, patients can look forward to enhanced healthcare services, a commitment to quality, and a remarkable health experience that honors the legacy both organizations represent in the healthcare sector. Through this partnership, the future of healthcare in Western Pennsylvania appears more promising than ever.
