Sewa International's Comprehensive Relief Efforts in Thailand's Earthquake Aftermath

Sewa International's Response to the Thailand Earthquake

On March 28, a devastating earthquake struck Thailand and neighboring regions, resulting in extensive loss and destruction. In the wake of this tragedy, Sewa International has promptly initiated a comprehensive relief operation to aid the affected communities. The organization has established a 24/7 Help Desk located in Bangkok's Chatuchak District, which serves as a vital resource center for those in need.

Among the various relief efforts undertaken by Sewa, the organization has begun operating a community kitchen that prepares and distributes over 4,000 hot meals daily. This effort is crucial for families who have been left homeless and in dire situations due to the earthquake. Additionally, Sewa has delivered 50 boxes of essential life-saving medicines to local hospitals, ensuring that medical facilities can cater to injured and displaced individuals.

Sewa's volunteers are also actively involved in distributing vital supplies across the affected areas. More than 80 boxes of food have been delivered, alongside 2,000 face masks, cartons of bottled water, juices, and other beverages aimed at supporting those impacted by the disaster. The organization has taken steps to enhance medical care by installing surgical lights at Sagaing General Hospital, thereby allowing for emergency procedures during nighttime hours.

Recognizing the urgent needs of those affected, Sewa has provided additional support such as UV-resistant tarpaulins, solar lanterns, tents, blankets, and plastic floor sheets for displaced families. These supplies are critical in ensuring that those who have lost their homes can find some level of comfort and security.

Recently, Sewa's representatives had the honor of meeting the Governor of Bangkok, Chadchart Sittipunt, to discuss ongoing operations and future plans to assist victims. As part of their relief mission, Sewa is also supporting SAR-K9 search operations, providing necessary aid to rescue dogs along with first responders on the ground.

In the regions hardest-hit, including Sagaing, Mandalay, and Nay Pyi Taw, teams have been deployed under the leadership of Dr. Ram Niwas to assess the situation comprehensively. This initiative includes identifying the needs of Thai and Burmese victims, many of whom remain trapped beneath the debris.

Sewa International's relief efforts are not isolated; they are carried out in collaboration with several partners, including the Indian Embassy in Yangon, the Government of India, and local organizations like the Hindu Family Relief Group. Shyam Parande, the Global Coordinator of Sewa International, emphasized the organization's commitment to responding to disasters with compassion and kindness, stating, "In every disaster, responding with compassion and kindness is our sacred duty."

The seismic event has had a devastating impact, with reports from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs indicating that over 3,600 lives have been lost, more than 5,000 individuals are injured, and millions have been displaced. Tragically, around 160 people remain unaccounted for, highlighting the urgency of Sewa's efforts.

Support for the relief initiatives has come from various communities, including the Sikh community, which has generously donated food, sanitary supplies, and bottled water. Joint efforts with the Royal Family Reserve Command, the Thai Disaster Relief Team, the Reserve Army, and local organizations are essential for successful field operations.
