Exploring New Interactions in Urban Spaces
Digital Entertainment Asset (DEA), in collaboration with Takenaka Corporation and Goodroom, is embarking on an exciting proof-of-concept experiment in the historic Hori Building located in the Shinbashi area of Tokyo. This project, known as "Tap & Trail," aims to revolutionize how individuals engage with historical architectures while promoting healthy interactions among users through innovative technology.
Objective of the Experiment
Shinbashi is a bustling area where diverse professionals converge; however, it's often characterized by goal-oriented activities that limit spontaneous interactions. The Tap & Trail initiative seeks to create an environment that encourages users to not only meet their objectives but also explore their surroundings more freely. By integrating a new perspective on spatial design, the experiment aims to embed pathways that entice visitors to engage more with one another and experience the space in a more dynamic way.
Participants will tap on NFC tags placed strategically within the building, simulating a game-like environment that encourages them to walk up stairs, explore provisions, and foster connections with others. This initiative is designed to make even first-time visitors feel comfortable and engaged within the area, enhancing their overall experience.
Detailed Implementation
In line with this vision, the project harnesses the resources from Takenaka's COT-Lab® in Singapore and Shinbashi to quantitatively analyze what kinds of spatial designs can catalyze healthier behaviors and interactions among users. By relying on objective behavioral logs instead of anecdotal evidence, the team is committed to uncovering new possibilities for space design and management that could improve urban environments significantly.
The experiment aims to integrate digital layers onto the historical architecture of the Hori Building while maintaining its integrity. This rich, historical space not only serves a multitude of functions, including coworking areas, cafes, and office spaces, but also reflects broader architectural values that might resonate within contemporary society. Through minimal physical alterations, such as the installation of NFC tags, the project will assess how user movements and interactions can be influenced and improved.
Key Areas of Investigation
The proof-of-concept will focus on several primary questions:
- - Will the implementation of user-friendly pathways and interactive elements naturally enhance physical activities, such as using stairs?
- - Can casual conversations among participants be sparked through created interactions?
- - Will behavior logs provide valuable feedback to the users?
- - Are the designed spatial cues effective in attracting new participants and enhancing the charm of coworking spaces?
Upon completion of the proof-of-concept, participants are expected to receive a personal report detailing their behavioral patterns and network expansion, providing insights into the potential changes they influenced during the study.
Future Developments
Based on insights gleaned from this project, DEA envisions a broader application that extends to offices, coworking spaces, and commercial establishments. By blending architecture with digital innovations and gamification strategies, the goal is to propose a new approach for spaces that invite people to gather, move, and connect in ways that challenge traditional norms.
