CMUH Introduces Innovative One-Stop Heart Surgery Service for Guam Residents

CMUH Revolutionizes Heart Care for Guam

Since its establishment in 2016, the China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) International Center has been a beacon of hope for residents of Guam, providing nearly 900 medical services tailored to their needs. This initiative aims not only to enhance healthcare accessibility but also to strengthen the bonds between Taiwan and Guam—an aspect underscored during the COVID-19 pandemic when CMUH donated 200,000 face masks to the island. This gesture was so impactful that the local government expressed its gratitude through a formal resolution.

A New Chapter in Heart Health

In October 2024, a pivotal moment in CMUH's healthcare offerings for Guam occurred with the launch of a groundbreaking one-stop heart surgery package. This program emerged as a direct response to the increasing need for advanced cardiac care. A striking case that exemplifies the efficacy of this program is that of Diana, a young woman from Guam who had been suffering from atrial fibrillation (AF)—a condition that leaves individuals drained and unable to lead an active lifestyle. Diana's perseverance in exploring treatment options led her to CMUH after exhausting local resources.

Despite undergoing anticoagulant therapy and monitoring her heart rhythm with a smartwatch, Diana experienced episodes that were both debilitating and prolonged. Local healthcare professionals suggested left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) to mitigate her stroke risk. Unfortunately, this critical procedure was not available in Guam, prompting Diana to seek help across the Taiwan Strait.

Upon her arrival, the CMUH team's ingenuity shone through. The one-stop heart surgery package combined AF ablation with LAAC into a single, time-efficient operation. This revolutionary approach not only significantly mitigated her stroke risk but also spared her from enduring multiple surgeries and long-term anticoagulant use.

Diana's rapid recovery showcased the package's success. She was soon back to her usual routine, embracing life with newfound vigor. "I'm so thankful for the advanced treatment and patient-centered care," she said, emphasizing how CMUH restored her ability to enjoy life. "I’m excited about the future!"

Strengthening Bonds and Expanding Horizons

Dr. Der-Yang Cho, Superintendent of CMUH, reiterated the importance of this initiative in fostering close ties with Guam. Regular visits to Guam by CMUH representatives are part of a broader strategy to assess patient needs and promote further collaboration. Jen-Ai-Chi Chou, CEO of the CMUH International Center, recently convened with notable figures such as Chia-Ping Liu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Guam and Tina Muña Barnes, Vice Speaker of the Guam Legislature, to discuss improving medical travel services for residents.

As CMUH continues to innovate and expand its healthcare offerings, it remains devoted to maintaining a high-quality healthcare infrastructure for residents of Guam. The hospital's commitment reflects Taiwan's broader commitment to international health partnerships, particularly in the face of evolving health challenges. By removing barriers to accessing advanced medical care, CMUH exemplifies the profound impact of 'medical diplomacy' in fostering healthier communities.

In summary, CMUH's pioneering efforts are not just reshaping the healthcare landscape for Guam but are also a testament to the benefits of international collaboration, underscoring the value of accessible, quality healthcare. With innovations like the one-stop heart surgery program, CMUH is setting a new standard for medical care that resonates far beyond borders.
