Huawei’s Tech4Nature Project Wins GLOMO LATAM Award for Jaguar Conservation in Mexico

Huawei’s Tech4Nature Project: A Milestone in Jaguar Conservation

In a remarkable display of technological prowess and environmental commitment, Huawei has recently been awarded the Global Mobile (GLOMO) LATAM award for social impact in Latin America at the GSMA M360 LATAM 2026 event. The accolade recognizes the company’s innovative project, Tech4Nature Mexico, which focuses on the conservation of jaguars within the natural reserve of Dzilam de Bravo in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

The Tech4Nature initiative is part of a global partnership between Huawei and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), aimed at harnessing advanced technology for environmental protection. This project not only benefits jaguar conservation but also uplifts local communities by fostering sustainable practices.

Samira Herrera, Huawei’s Communication and Public Relations Director in Mexico, encapsulated the essence of the initiative, stating, "This recognition reflects the power of technology when it serves both people and the planet.” The Tech4Nature Mexico project is an illustration of how cross-sector collaboration can yield tangible, positive outcomes for biodiversity and community development.

Initiated in 2022, the project has progressed to its second phase through a collaborative effort involving partners such as IUCN, the Yucatán government, C Minds, the Yucatán Polytechnic University (UPY), and the local community within the Dzilam de Bravo reserve. This partnership employs advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence for species detection and identification, community-led monitoring and management, and engagement across governmental, academic, civil society, and private sector stakeholders.

Regina Cervera, Project Coordinator for Tech4Nature Mexico at C Minds’ AI for Climate initiative, emphasized the role of technology in transforming data into effective conservation policies. She pointed out, "Tech4Nature Mexico demonstrates that the true potential of technology lies in transforming data into coordinated efforts for nature conservation. By utilizing tools like artificial intelligence, we can support ecosystems crucial for our economies and future."

Since the project’s inception, 26 camera traps and 60 acoustic devices have been deployed in the reserve, successfully identifying over 147 species, 40 of which are considered endangered. Notably, the monitoring system has detected 16 distinct jaguars, providing crucial insights into their behavior, movement patterns, and conservation needs, essential for maintaining ecological balance in the reserve.

Huawei’s cloud solutions play a vital role in processing and analyzing field data. The system has not only captured video evidence of jaguars but also automatically analyzed more than 100,000 images and 600,000 audio recordings. These data-driven insights enhance the understanding of local fauna and ecosystems, resulting in more effective biodiversity conservation strategies and influencing public policy.

Moreover, the protected area has expanded significantly, growing from 69,000 hectares to 104,000 hectares, thereby demonstrating the initiative's impact on a national scale.

The integration of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud storage, and data analytics has enabled the Tech4Nature Mexico project to create a sustainable scientific model for nature conservation that balances innovation with community involvement. Wireless connectivity solutions by Huawei are pivotal for transmitting environmental data, reflecting a prominent theme at the M360 LATAM 2026 conference.

This event, held on May 13 and 14, gathered regional and global leaders from the technology ecosystem, mobile networks, governments, and related industries to discuss leveraging technology for a better future for all. The GLOMO LATAM awards celebrate change-makers redefining technology, connectivity, and social progress in the region. The recognition of Tech4Nature Mexico highlights its innovative solutions and significant social and environmental benefits for Latin America.

Through the Tech4Nature Mexico initiative, Huawei affirms its commitment to leveraging technology as a tool for building a more sustainable and inclusive future while supporting projects that contribute to environmental conservation and community development.
