Highlighting the Risks of Problem Gambling in Louisiana
In a proclamation made by Governor Jeff Landry, March has been designated as Problem Gambling Awareness Month in Louisiana. This important initiative aims to shine a spotlight on the serious public health issue of problem gambling, which affects individuals across all age groups in the state.
Understanding the Problem
According to recent studies, approximately 2.5 million adults in the U.S. meet the criteria for a severe gambling disorder, with millions more facing milder, yet significant, issues related to gambling. Gambling disorders are associated with increased risks of various mental health problems, including depression and substance abuse. Alarmingly, research indicates that one in five individuals struggling with a gambling disorder will attempt suicide, highlighting the critical nature of this addiction.
Given these statistics, there is a pressing need for community awareness and action. The Northeast Delta Human Services Authority (NEDHSA) is at the forefront of addressing these issues within its service area, which spans across 12 parishes in Louisiana.
NEDHSA's Role in Prevention and Treatment
To tackle the often hidden nature of gambling disorders, NEDHSA has launched a comprehensive multi-media awareness campaign. This includes billboard advertisements and educational videos, all designed to inform the public about how gambling can affect the brain's reward systems similarly to substances like drugs and alcohol. These efforts aim to reach rural communities, where stigma may hinder individuals from seeking necessary help.
NEDHSA Executive Director Dr. Monteic A. Sizer has stressed the significance of intervention and effective treatment. He noted, “Problem gambling is becoming a significant social and healthcare problem due to online innovations and targeted marketing strategies.” What’s more, he emphasized that prevention and treatment can substantially reduce the associated risks of suicide, mental health disorders, and addiction. “At NEDHSA, we know that early screening can prevent long-term harm,” added Dr. Sizer.
Integrated Care for Better Outcomes
The agency adopts a holistic approach to treatment by integrating gambling addiction services within its overall healthcare framework. They provide specialized treatment through clinics and partner with experts throughout the 12 parishes to make sure that individuals can access the help they need within their own communities. This method signifies a shift from viewing gambling as a standalone issue towards understanding it as part of a person's overall wellness.
Compounded by the rapid rise in online gaming and sports betting, youth are particularly vulnerable to these challenges. National studies indicate that between 4% and 6% of adolescents experience problem gambling, with many beginning their gambling journeys before the age of 18, further complicating the issue.
Janice O. Rogers, Director of Integrated Care at NEDHSA, commented on the concerning rise in gambling among youth: “In our rural service area, the increased access to online and sports betting is impacting both adults and youth. Gambling addiction does not occur in isolation; it significantly affects mental health, financial stability, and overall well-being.”
