Times Square Billboards Commemorate the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 with a Moment of Silence
Times Square's Unprecedented Tribute to 9/11 Victims
In a significant gesture of remembrance, Times Square's renowned digital billboards will take a pause from their usual advertising on the morning of September 11, 2026. This coordinated effort, orchestrated by the nonprofit organization 9/11 Day, aims to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the tragic September 11 attacks.
At precisely 9:11 a.m. ET, over 30 prominent billboards in Times Square will display a unified commemorative message during a one-minute National Moment of Silence. This initiative seeks to foster collective reflection among the millions who pass through this iconic space, drawing attention to the importance of remembrance and unity in the wake of tragedy.
The Heart Behind the Initiative
The inspiration for this observance stems from the vision of 9/11 Day's co-founders, Jay Winuk and David Paine. Winuk, who lost his brother Glenn in the attacks, expressed the personal significance of this event, stating, “As did so many first responders, my brother Glenn ran toward danger to help people he didn't know. This moment of silence, observed in the heart of Times Square, is an act of remembrance for those we lost.”
The tribute includes the unveiling of an impressive 40-foot-long illuminated sculpture named "UNIITE," which embodies the spirit of community and empathy. This sculpture will also be featured in various locations, encouraging individuals across the country to engage in acts of kindness and service in honor of the lives lost in 9/11.
Join the National Moment of Silence
The Moment of Silence offers an opportunity for all Americans to pause and honor the memories of those who perished and those who rose in service during the aftermath of the attacks. “We hope this will become an annual ritual,” commented Paine, aiming to foster a culture of remembrance through national observance.
