Black AI's Innovative Approach to Human-Robot Collaboration at HUMANOID HACK TOKYO

Black AI's Innovative Collaboration at HUMANOID HACK TOKYO

Black AI Inc., based in Shibuya, Tokyo, is set to participate in the upcoming humanoid hackathon "HUMANOID HACK TOKYO" on May 30-31, 2026. Their innovative project focuses on a traditional Japanese activity—mochi pounding—where both humans and humanoid robots will work together, showcasing the potential of human-robot collaboration in a culturally significant context.

Project Overview

The heart of the demonstration lies in the delicate interplay required during mochi pounding, where coordinating actions between individuals is essential. In the proposed setup, one participant will swing a pestle, while another will manage the rice cake's position. The humanoid robot will utilize a camera system to recognize the human hand's position. It will pause its movements whenever human hands are in the mortar, ensuring safety during the collaboration. This scenario embodies the project’s core theme of achieving harmony between human and machine actions—moving beyond mere automation to a true collaboration that understands human dynamics.

Social Significance

Japan faces significant challenges regarding the preservation of artisan skills and craftsmanship in the context of an aging population and a shortage of successors. Many traditional techniques and workplace knowledge are at risk of extinction. In this landscape, while robotics has primarily developed to drive automation and reduce workforce needs, Black AI proposes a different perspective. They envision robots that do not replace humans but rather work alongside them, learning and inheriting skills from their human counterparts.

In this project, a robot that absorbs the artisan’s techniques aims to operate in tandem with human collaborators, creating a future where skill inheritance and human-robot cooperation coexist harmoniously.

Why Mochi Pounding?

Mochi pounding is an exemplary representation of cooperation in Japanese culture, showcasing a teamwork dynamic that is both intricate and demanding. A misstep in timing can result in accidents, thus requiring a high level of mutual understanding and trust among participants. By using this easily relatable activity, Black AI hopes to provide an intuitive glimpse into a world where humans and robots can collaborate safely and naturally.
