U.S. Mayors Unite for a National Tour Addressing the Affordability Crisis

U.S. Mayors Address Rising Costs with New National Affordability Tour

The U.S. Conference of Mayors has initiated an impactful four-city national tour aimed at finding solutions to a pressing issue affecting American families: the increasing cost of daily life. SET to commence on October 8 in Albuquerque, this tour will bring together mayors, local leaders, and community representatives to discuss how families are coping with escalating expenses and to highlight effective solutions that cities are implementing.

Launching the Tour

The first stop will take place in Albuquerque, where Mayor Tim Keller will join the dialogue on childcare affordability. Subsequent stops include Austin on October 14—focusing on housing issues with Mayor Kirk Watson—Columbus on October 21 to discuss healthcare accessibility with Mayor Andrew J. Ginther, and lastly Atlanta on October 29, addressing food affordability concerns with Mayor Andre Dickens.

Todd Gloria, the Mayor of San Diego and President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, "As mayors, affordability is the issue we hear about everywhere we go. Families are working hard, but the rising cost of housing, groceries, childcare, and healthcare is making it harder to get by and get ahead. This tour is about learning from one another, spotlighting what works, and finding ways to make life more affordable for American families."

Addressing Household Strain

The focus will be on critical areas that are squeezing household budgets, including childcare, housing, healthcare, and food expenses. By exploring successful strategies implemented in various communities, the aim is not only to inform but also to inspire changes that can be replicated nationwide.

The decision to launch this tour comes on the heels of a recent survey commissioned by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. This research revealed a startling consensus among 113 mayors, with 96% acknowledging that residents are extremely concerned about the affordability crisis. Furthermore, nearly 93% noted that the cost of living in their jurisdictions has worsened over the past year, and 39% confirmed it has done so significantly. Housing costs emerged as a primary driver of the affordability crisis, with an overwhelming 96% of mayors agreeing on this point.

The Need for Federal Action

The rising demands for assistance programs have placed many cities in a challenging situation, as they strive to provide relief through reduced taxes and fees while simultaneously trying to address the demands of residents facing economic hardships. This tour seeks to bring awareness to the necessity for federal support in easing these financial pressures that families are enduring daily.

The survey, conducted between August 18 and September 4, 2026, showed that the cities represented by these mayors account for approximately 32.1 million Americans, underscoring the widespread impact of the affordability struggle across the nation.

Looking Ahead

As the U.S. Mayors prepare for the Affordability Tour, further details regarding participants and resources at each stop will soon be available. This initiative marks a vital step in addressing a critical issue that resonates with families struggling to make ends meet.
