Exploring the New Norms of IP Hits Through BL: A Seminar for Entertainment Executives

Seminar Overview

On July 30th, 2026, Sandias, known for operating the BL information site "ChilChil," will conduct a free seminar titled "Understanding New Norms of Modern IP Hits Through BL." This event is tailored for executives and stakeholders in the entertainment, publishing, film, gaming, music, and character business sectors.

Rethinking BL Beyond Its Stereotypes

BL (Boys' Love) encompasses narratives that often include sexual expressions which are considered essential attractions. However, by solely focusing on the visual stimuli and adult themes in these works, we risk diminishing the significance of relationships, romance, and character interpretations.

What BL has cultivated over time is a method of analyzing character interactions, enhancing their appeal, and understanding how shared and differing interpretations generate engagement and sales. Modern IP hits rely not only on the quality of the work itself but also on the ways fans interpret relationships, discuss nuances, and cultivate their favorites. Activities such as social media discussions, fan creations, repeat viewings, event attendance, and merchandise purchases significantly correlate with how these relationships are perceived, rather than existing solely in the realm of the work.

This seminar aims to re-envision BL not as a niche genre but as a leading example that can elucidate the mechanisms behind IP business enthusiasm.

Expanding Relationship Consumption Beyond BL

The seminar will also address relationship consumption in non-BL domains. For instance, in long-form dark fantasy or ensemble stories, themes of camaraderie, betrayal, mission, obsession, loss, and irredeemability deeply intertwine with character relationships. Fans don’t just evaluate characters in isolation, but rather explore how their essence is revealed through their relationships with others.

In the realm of male idol IPs and music IPs, the charm of individual idols is complemented by their group dynamics, seniority relations, rivalries, and live performance pairings, which support ongoing engagement and consumption. Similarly, in battle manga or shounen narratives, elements of friendship, dependence, duality, opposing forces, and ethical dilemmas continue to inspire long-term character assessment and analysis. The inquiries into who interacts with whom and how these relationships bring about change open up rich discussions that keep fans engaged.

Even in genres such as SF, historical dramas, political pieces, and space operas, themes such as master-servant dynamics, ideological conflicts, loss, and heritage fortify the enduring memory of the narratives. While these stories may not be inherently BL, they reveal that the fervor and engagement generated by BL fan culture and its intense reading of relationships, favorites, and interpretations support IP hits across genres.
