Exceptional Achievement: Eisuke Shimizu Named among World's Top 10 at JCI TOYP 2025

Celebrating a Remarkable Achievement

Japan has reason to celebrate as Eisuke Shimizu, the CEO of OUI and an ophthalmologist, has been recognized as one of the world's Top 10 by the JCI TOYP (The Outstanding Young Persons) award for the year 2025. This prestigious accolade was bestowed during the JCI Awards Ceremony held on November 8, 2025, in Tunisia, making it a stellar moment for Japan, which had not seen such recognition in seven years. The Japan Junior Chamber (Japan JC), which organizes the TOYP awards, has confirmed that Shimizu’s selection adds to the rich legacy of outstanding young achievers.

Understanding the TOYP Program

TOYP, which stands for The Outstanding Young Persons, has been integral to promoting young leaders who make significant social impacts globally. Initiated in 1938 in the United States, the TOYP program evolved over the years, embracing individuals who contribute innovatively in various sectors. Since its inception under the Junior Chamber International (JCI) in 1983, many notable figures, including former presidents and iconic personalities, have been recipients of this award.

In Japan, this initiative began in 1987. Each year's Grand Prix winner becomes a representative for Japan in the following year's JCI TOYP. This year, over 120 applications from 30 countries were reviewed by a panel of more than 25 esteemed judges, coupled with public voting, finally leading to the announcement of the Top 10.

Shimizu's Journey

Eisuke Shimizu, born in 1987 in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, has been committed to reducing blindness globally. He developed the Smart Eye Camera, a groundbreaking device that allows ophthalmic examinations to be performed using a smartphone. This innovation has enabled precise eye care accessibility anywhere in the world, contributing to over 150,000 ophthalmic diagnoses in more than 60 countries, effectively reducing the staggering social and economic cost associated with vision impairment.

At the award ceremony, Shimizu expressed his gratitude and amazement, not initially expecting this honor. “This award provides an incredible opportunity to broaden our activities through networking with other top individuals worldwide,” he stated. Since receiving the JCI Japan TOYP Grand Prix, he has witnessed an overwhelming response through media coverage and speaking opportunities, motivating him further amidst competition with other remarkable nominees.

Comments from Japan JC Leadership

Commenting on Shimizu’s achievement, Taiyo Yamada, Chairman of the JCI Japan TOYP Committee, said, “We are immensely proud that Shimizu, recognized as Japan's TOYP Grand Prix winner in 2024, has now gained global recognition as a Top 10 honoree. His efforts have created a positive ripple effect, inspiring a commitment to challenge norms among young people and communities.” He reiterated that this recognition is not just a personal achievement for Shimizu, but a testament to the support and dedication of those around him.

The Path Forward

To commemorate Shimizu’s inspirational journey and contribution, a documentary has been produced, showcasing his life as a physician, entrepreneur, and award winner. This film captures the essence of the TOYP contest and its pivotal role in fostering connections worldwide. It is available on the Careezotimes YouTube channel, providing valuable insights into his endeavors.
