President Trump Commemorates National Purple Heart Day
On August 7, 2025, President Trump marked the inaugural National Purple Heart Day at the White House, honoring the courageous individuals who have been wounded in combat or have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. In conjunction with this tribute, the National Purple Heart Honor Mission announced the opening of nominations for the 2026 Purple Heart Patriot Project, a significant initiative that aims to recognize and celebrate the bravery of these heroes.
The Purple Heart, a prestigious military decoration, has been awarded to over 1.8 million Americans throughout history. While it symbolizes valor and sacrifice, it remains an award that is often received under the most tragic of circumstances. The honorees selected to participate in the upcoming program will represent each state, having been nominated for their extraordinary service both during and after their military careers.
The nomination process is a straightforward yet vital step towards recognizing these unsung heroes. Individuals wishing to nominate a Purple Heart recipient must visit the National Purple Heart Honor Mission's website where they can complete a nomination form. This form requires the nominee’s details as well as a 350-word description highlighting why the individual deserves this recognition, with a strong focus on their military accomplishments and their contributions to their communities post-service.
The selected honorees and their escorts will be awarded an all-expenses-paid trip filled with tributes, tours, and ceremonies from April 27 to April 30, 2026. Events during this immersive experience include significant visits to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and historic sites pivotal to the nation’s military heritage, such as Washington's Headquarters, where the Badge of Military Merit originated in 1782. Additionally, honorees will have a private tour of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, which serves as a dedicated space for commemorating the service and sacrifice of those who have received this esteemed award.
"The Purple Heart recipients we honor are often described as humble heroes, having not only served bravely but also continuing to make impactful contributions to their communities long after wearing the uniform," said National Purple Heart Honor Mission Board Chairman Jeremy McVey. "For veterans, especially those from previous conflicts like Vietnam, this event offers a critical opportunity for recognition and camaraderie, making it a welcomed homecoming for many."
The call for nominations is open until September 26, 2025, and the complete list of honored individuals will be unveiled on Veterans Day, November 11, 2025. As these celebrations unfold, the hope is that the stories of valor from these recipients will inspire the next generation, reminding all Americans of the freedoms and liberties achieved through sacrifice.
Col. Russell Vernon, Executive Director of the National Purple Heart Honor Mission, emphasized the importance of storytelling and memory preservation. “By sharing their journeys, we ensure that future generations understand the price of the freedoms we enjoy today. Every Purple Heart recipient has a story worth telling, and these heroes deserve to be celebrated for their extraordinary sacrifices,” he remarked.
For businesses and individuals interested in supporting the Patriot Project through sponsorship or donations, opportunities exist, and contributions are tax-deductible under the relevant laws. Previous years’ events and testimonials from honorees can also be accessed on the Honor Mission's YouTube channel, highlighting the emotional impact this initiative has had.
The National Purple Heart Honor Mission operates as a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating combat-wounded veterans through special outreach and educational programs. Their mission is not only to honor but to engage the public in the profound narratives that shape our nation’s history, inspiring respect and gratitude for those who bravely served.
