Okayama University Kicks Off the New Year

On January 5, 2026, Okayama University, under the leadership of President Yoshitomo Nasu, held its 'Reiwa 8 New Year Ceremony' at the Golden Light Hall of the 50th Anniversary Memorial Hall on the Tsushima Campus. The event was conducted in a hybrid format, welcoming approximately 420 faculty and staff members both in-person and online.

President Nasu began his address expressing gratitude for the dedication of faculty and staff throughout the past year. He emphasized upon the key themes for the year, which include 'Fleeting Trends', the 'Community Core and Distinctive Research University Enhancement Project (J-PEAKS)', and a vision towards 2050. Nasu reaffirmed the university’s commitment to enhancing its role as a research-oriented institution, with a focus on integrating education and research as two pivotal components.

During his speech, Nasu referred to the 'Research University Declaration' announced in October the previous year. He highlighted the importance of prioritizing research at the heart of the university’s mission and reiterated the commitment to accelerating efforts in accordance with this declaration. He promised that Okayama University would evolve as a research institution contributing positively to society.

Furthermore, in light of the 'Harassment Elimination Declaration' released in December, President Nasu expressed a determined stance against harassment, stating, 'We will not tolerate it, ignore it, or conceal it.' He reinforced the aim of ensuring psychological safety as a fundamental component of university operations. Recognizing the persistent issues of harassment within academic settings, he called for heightened awareness and proactive measures among all faculty and staff.

As the ceremony drew to a close, President Nasu shared an encouraging perspective on challenges, interpreting the term 'difficult' as a sign of impending significant change. He urged the attendees, 'If in doubt, move forward; if struggling, progress ahead. Regret comes afterward.' He emphasized the aspiration for Okayama University to thrive in this transformative period, marking this year’s motto as 'Big Changes Ahead'. With a call for courageous action, he aims to ensure that Okayama University can navigate and adapt to future developments successfully.

The university anticipates continued progress and innovation in its mission to be a distinctive research hub within the community. Staying aligned with its commitment to sustainable development, Okayama University will be actively engaging in projects that support the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2026, the focus will remain on cultivating a research environment that is responsive to both local and global challenges, ultimately aspiring to be at the forefront of educational and research collaboration.
