Innovative Solutions for Sewer Inspections
In a groundbreaking initiative,
Liberaware and
CalTa have teamed up to harness cutting-edge technology in sewer management. Selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s 2023 application research theme titled "Utilizing Data and Digital Technology in Sewers," this collaboration aims to improve inspection and maintenance processes in aging sewer systems.
Project Overview
The project, titled
Development of Digital Twin and Small Drone DX Solutions for Sewer Pipe Inspections, focuses on addressing significant challenges faced in the maintenance of deteriorating sewer infrastructure. The teams at Liberaware and CalTa have identified several key issues through extensive collaborations with sewer professionals:
- - Many inspection areas are confined spaces where human access or traditional camera equipment is challenging.
- - The presence of toxic gases like hydrogen sulfide poses health risks to workers during inspections.
- - Documentation of anomalies during inspections often lacks comprehensive data collection and long-term trend analysis.
To tackle these problems, the project will leverage Liberaware's advanced self-positioning and measurement technology in their drones, complemented by CalTa's scalable 3D digital twin framework. The goals include:
- - Establishing a safe inspection method that eliminates the need for personnel to enter hazardous environments.
- - Enhancing the quality of inspection results through high-accuracy positioning capabilities, even in non-GPS settings.
- - Creating a unified system to manage 3D data, sensor information, and video recordings within a digital twin environment.
- - Supporting planned maintenance through data comparison and analytical processes.
Call for Proposals Overview
The anticipated duration of this project is from the contract signing to March 16, 2026, with a maximum project budget of 26.8 million JPY.
