On October 11, 2025, the annual event "Shirotori Odori in Ikebukuro" will take place, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Gujo, Gifu. This year, attendees can enjoy an extended dancing schedule, with members from the Gujo Shirotori Preservation Society invited to showcase authentic performances. Whether you're a seasoned dancer or a complete novice, the on-site dance lessons will provide a welcoming space to learn and join in the festivities.
The event promises a delightful array of traditional Gujo cuisine, including salt-grilled sweetfish, soy sauce-franks from Akikata Ham, Gujo Hachiman craft beer, craft gin from Tatsumi Distillery, and local sake. Participants can indulge in these specialties while immersing themselves in Gujo’s unique culture.
Adding to the experience, visitors will be treated to live singing and music performances by the Shirotori dance group, alongside hands-on workshops. One of the highlights is a workshop for creating original wooden geta (traditional Japanese sandals) featuring the event’s branding. Additionally, guests can engage in silk screen printing workshops, browse a selection of dance costumes, kimonos, tenugui (Japanese hand towels), and other merchandise inspired by Gujo Shirotori.
This year, we are excited to announce our crowdfunding campaign, which allows supporters to access exclusive merchandise and paper lantern sponsorships—items that can only be found at this event. Learn more about supporting "Shirotori Odori in Ikebukuro" on our campaign page.
The story behind this event originates from a desire to share the beauty of Gujo Shirotori’s cultural practices with a wider audience. The Shirotori area is nestled in the verdant landscapes of Oku Mino in Gifu Prefecture. By presenting this culture in Tokyo, we aim to reach those unable to visit the actual location and share the spirit of Gujo. The event serves as a bridge connecting people through dance, culture, and community.
Following the successful inaugural event last year, which drew approximately 1,500 attendees, we received heartwarming feedback, with 94% of participants rating it as "fun." Many expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to experience Shirotori Odori in Tokyo, with some wanting even more time on the dance floor.
This year's event will feature a fully packed schedule to ensure visitors have an unforgettable experience.
