Exploring Traditional Crafts in Fukui: A Unique Tour with Halmek

Discover the Heart of Fukui's Traditional Crafts

Halmek, the leading magazine in Japan, is excited to announce its third tourism project in collaboration with Fukui Prefecture, themed "Discover the Essence of Fukui’s Crafts." The initiative aims to introduce readers to five skilled artisans whose work encapsulates the rich history and culture of the region.

With the extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen scheduled for March 2024, accessibility to Fukui from the Kanto and Tohoku regions will significantly improve, attracting more senior travelers eager for unique experiences. Notably, around half of the visitors to Fukui are over the age of 50, aligning perfectly with the target audience of Halmek. This partnership began in 2024, with each year seeing the project evolve and continue to highlight Fukui’s attractions.

Opportunities for Engagement

In its inaugural year, Halmek hosted the "Get to Know Fukui" seminar, which drew around 320 attendees, both in-person and online, receiving high satisfaction ratings. The following year, the "Read, See, and Travel" project emerged, where local Halmek readers served as guides, providing authentic insights into Fukui’s cuisine and attractions.

Now, in its third year, the focus shifts to the theme of craftsmanship. The aim is to go beyond typical sightseeing to immerse participants in Fukui’s exclusive artisanal culture. This will involve understanding the skills and passions of the region’s craftsmen, enriching participants' knowledge of Fukui’s history and traditions.

Upcoming Features in Halmek Magazine

The September 2026 issue of Halmek, set for release on August 10, will feature a couple from Tokyo visiting various locations in Fukui, exploring the theme of traditional crafts. They will experience seven unique craft sectors, including Echizen knives, Miso, Sabae glasses, Wakasa lacquer chopsticks, Heshiko, Japanese sake, and Wakasa agate. This feature will not only celebrate the artisans’ time-honored skills but also unpack the cultural significance behind Fukui’s rich craft history.

Additionally, Halmek is organizing an original tour that allows readers to engage with these artisans in person. The tour will traverse Fukui from north (Reihoku) to south (Reinan), facilitating direct exchanges with five artisans, while also enjoying the region's natural beauty, hot springs, and local delicacies like the coveted Echizen crab.

A New Model for Tourism

Through this collaboration, Halmek seeks to inspire women over 50 to pursue memorable travel experiences. By continuing to partner with Fukui Prefecture, the endeavor aims to promote the region’s traditional cultural allure while fostering a network of local residents and visitors.

Stay tuned for future updates and engage with the heritage of Fukui through these unique experiences provided by Halmek.
