The Rise of Pet Ownership and Its Health Benefits in America

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) recently published the results of their 2026 benchmark survey, shedding light on the evolving relationship between Americans and their pets. This survey not only highlights the increase in pet ownership but also strongly ties it to a growing awareness of the various health benefits tied to having pets.

According to the survey, an impressive 98% of pet owners have experienced at least one health benefit from their furry companions. This statistic underscores a significant shift in public perception, as 62% of Americans—both pet owners and non-owners—have engaged in discussions about the health advantages associated with pets. It's clear that the conversation around pet ownership is shifting; a staggering 97% of all respondents are aware of at least one scientifically supported health benefit of having a pet.

The report reveals a notable trend: approximately 74% of Americans currently have at least one pet, with an additional 15% expressing intentions to acquire one in the near future. Many households have embraced multiple pets, with 64% of owners reporting multi-pet homes. On average, households own about three pets, demonstrating a strong inclination toward supporting the human-animal bond.

"Nine in ten Americans either have a pet or want one, driven by the understanding that the bonds we share with our pets are good for our health," states Steven Feldman, President of HABRI. The survey not only indicates a growing cultural acceptance of pets but also a widespread desire to embrace pet-friendly policies within communities. In fact, 83% of survey participants support the notion of pet-friendly public spaces, 81% would prefer to shop at pet-friendly businesses, and 80% advocate for fewer restrictions on pets in rental housing.

The mental health benefits of owning a pet are becoming common knowledge. The average American is now familiar with 18 different health benefits linked to pets, compared to just 12 in 2021. The top recognized advantages include reducing feelings of loneliness (92%), alleviating depression (89%), lowering stress levels (88%), and aiding individuals in coping with life's challenges (87%).

Knowledge of scientific research on the human-animal bond appears to inspire positive pet care behaviors among owners. An impressive 94% of respondents indicated that understanding these benefits encourages them to spend more quality time with their pets, while 91% expressed a commitment to maintaining their pets' health through regular veterinary check-ups. High-quality nutrition is also a priority for 88% of survey participants, and 91% reported an overall improvement in their pet care practices.

The motivations behind future pet ownership also highlight the significance of the human-animal bond. Among the 15% of Americans considering pet acquisition, compelling factors include companionship (87%), emotional support (74%), reduction in loneliness (71%), and enhancement of mental health (68%). Notably, 77% of parents reported that their children are a driving force in their decision to adopt pets.

Potential barriers to pet ownership were also addressed in the survey. Concerns about finding pet-friendly housing were echoed by nearly 29% of respondents. The rising costs associated with pet ownership deterred 37% from acquiring pets. As a result, many potential pet owners are showing a reflective approach, indicating they wish to wait for a more suitable time to adopt.

In addition to the challenges, fostering pets appears to be gaining traction as a pathway to ownership. A significant 50% of respondents expressed interest in fostering, with 37% of future pet owners open to considering fostering as a means to test compatibility with specific animals.

Fundamentally, this survey underlines the deep-rooted connection between pets and their owners in contemporary American society. HABRI emphasizes the need to ensure that the benefits of pet ownership are accessible to all, advocating for community-wide support of pet-inclusive policies. This creates an environment where the enriching experience of pet ownership can thrive, allowing individuals and families to bond with their animal companions.

In conclusion, the findings from the HABRI survey reveal not only a substantial increase in pet ownership in the United States but also an ever-growing recognition of the numerous health benefits pets confer on individuals. The evolving narrative surrounding the human-animal bond points to a future where pet ownership is not just a personal choice, but a valued part of the communal framework that promotes both mental and emotional well-being.
