Revamped Coordination Ability Assessment in Kids' Sports Classes for Enhanced Growth Feedback

Revamped Coordination Ability Assessment in Kids' Sports Classes

Life & Sports, based in Toshima, Tokyo, has made significant updates to its coordination ability assessment for its renowned kids' sports classes, known as the 'Body Function Sports Classroom.' This initiative aims to provide clearer and more understandable feedback regarding each child's physical abilities and growth. The revised program will officially begin in the 2026 fiscal year, following successful trials and feedback from parents.

Emphasizing Individual Growth

One of the key focuses of the 'Body Function Sports Classroom' is not only to develop gymnastics skills but also to enhance fundamental coordination abilities essential for all sports. Growth in children, however, isn't merely about passing or failing tests. For many parents, noticing their children's daily improvements can be challenging. Phrases such as 'My child can move faster than before' or 'They can adapt their movements more effectively to different situations' may not always be articulate or visible. This is why the classroom team has incorporated a system to measure and visualize individual growth through coordination ability assessments.

Renewed Measurement System Based on Parental Feedback

In response to valuable feedback from parents, the measurement process has been reviewed and updated to ensure that results are conveyed more clearly. The main changes include:
  • - Conducting regular assessments twice a year (between July-September and January-March)
  • - Evaluating four specific types of coordination abilities
  • - Creating growth reports that allow for comparisons with previous assessments
  • - Shifting the evaluation approach from rankings to personal growth verification
  • - Improving feedback content to aid parents in tracking their child's transformations effectively

The results of these assessments will culminate in a comprehensive report at the end of the fiscal year, allowing parents to continuously monitor their child's growth.

Four Core Abilities in Focus

The newly refined measurement system will assess the following four critical abilities:
  • - Reaction Ability: The skill to respond quickly upon hearing cues
  • - Transformation Ability: The capability to think and shift movements according to changing situations
  • - Positioning and Identification Ability: The ability to understand the spatial relationship between objects and people, adjusting body movements accordingly
  • - Linkage Ability: The proficiency to move the body fluidly and connect multiple actions smoothly

Each of these abilities serves as a foundational skill for various sports, including gymnastics, ball games, and track and field.

Fostering Personal Growth

It's essential to clarify that the coordination ability assessment is not about comparing children with one another. The focal point remains on individual growth, with the aim to recognize personal achievements such as,
  • - 'I can do this faster than I did before'
  • - 'I managed to perform a movement I once struggled with'

The ultimate goal is for children to realize their development and gain confidence to take on new challenges.

Future Prospects

The 'Body Function Sports Classroom' aspires not only to enhance gymnastics techniques but also to build a foundational skill set that enables children to engage in various sports activities in the future. Through the newly revised coordination ability assessments, the classroom is committed to closely monitor and support the growth of children, alongside their parents, while tailoring instructional approaches to meet each child's unique needs.
