UK Biocentre Partners with Azenta for Advanced Sample Storage Solutions in Research
Transforming Biomedical Research with Advanced Storage Solutions
In a significant step towards enhancing research capabilities, UK Biocentre has announced its partnership with Azenta, Inc. to incorporate the BioArc Ultra automated storage system. This collaboration aims to bolster the management and preservation of valuable biological samples, crucial for them in ongoing and emerging health research projects such as the UK's comprehensive health initiative, Our Future Health.
Expanding Storage Capacity
The installation of the BioArc Ultra system is set to take place at the UK Biocentre's expansive facility, which spans 70,000 square feet located in Milton Keynes, England. With the integration of this new technology, the biocentre is gearing up to increase its storage capacity from the already impressive 35 million samples by an additional 16 million samples. This growth will enhance their ability to handle large-scale biomedical research, making critical contributions in areas of disease prevention, detection, and treatment.
The BioArc Ultra is part of a growing suite of Azenta's automated systems, joining the seven existing BioArc Flex systems at the facility. Designed for high-density storage at ultra-low temperatures of -80°C, this system offers remarkable efficiency, capable of managing up to nine million sample picks annually.
A Commitment to Sustainability
One of the most noteworthy features of the BioArc Ultra is its eco-friendly design. It utilizes a refrigeration system that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential and zero Global Warming Potential, aligning perfectly with UK Biocentre's commitment to reducing carbon emissions. This innovative approach not only promises operational benefits such as reduced footprint, lower labor costs, and diminished electricity needs compared to other systems on the market but also emphasizes sustainability in scientific research.
Dr. Tony Cox OBE, CEO of UK Biocentre, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "The BioArc Ultra ensures that UK Biocentre remains at the forefront of large-scale sample storage innovation while fulfilling our mission to reduce the environmental impact of vital clinical and life science research." The technology enables them to maximize the utility of every collected sample, furthering their commitment to impactful research.
Enabling Breakthrough Improvements
For Azenta Life Sciences, the introduction of the BioArc Ultra represents an exciting advance in sample storage capabilities. Alex Esmon, Vice President and General Manager for Global Products, noted, "This addition delivers on the promise of enabling breakthroughs faster through substantial improvements in proven automation and refrigeration technology. Ensuring critical sample integrity while streamlining workflows is vital for impactful research."
This partnership not only shows a progressive movement in the realm of biomedical research but also sets a new standard for operational efficiency and sustainability practices in sample management.
