AmpUp's Revolutionary Managed EV Charging Project
In a significant advancement for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure,
AmpUp, a renowned provider of EV charging management solutions based in
East Hartford, Connecticut, has been selected by the state's regulatory authority. The
Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) has endorsed AmpUp's
Adapt & Earn managed charging project for large-scale deployment, marking it as the sole project to be chosen among others evaluated in Cycle 1 of the
Innovative Energy Solutions (IES) Program. This decision serves as a pathway to enhance the EV charging ecosystem across Connecticut by facilitating public and shared EV chargers.
The Adaptive & Earn model brilliantly addresses a critical limitation of managed charging systems, which have typically relied on direct utility relationships between property owners and vehicle operators. By incentivizing participation within its platform, AmpUp has cleverly removed barriers that prevented public charging from being integrated into grid management programs. Participants engage within the system by allowing brief pauses in charging during peak demand periods, providing them wallet credits immediately via the AmpUp app, all without the need for additional telematics or complex setups.
Over the course of an 18-month pilot conducted with
Eversource Energy, AmpUp managed to enroll over
1,000 charging ports across an impressive range of approximately
200 locations, covering diverse commercial sectors. Results highlighted the project's effectiveness, contributing significantly to grid relief and demonstrating strong user engagement:
- - Effective Grid Relief: During a regional heatwave where wholesale electricity prices surged by over 3,600%, the project successfully shifted charging activities to off-peak times, saving roughly one-third of the cost of traditional peak supply.
- - High Participation Rates: A staggering 91% of participating drivers reported experiencing no inconvenience due to the brief charging pauses. Furthermore, 87% found the enrollment process intuitive and user-friendly, while 83% expressed a willingness to partake again in future programs, especially noting high rates at multifamily housing sites with a 33% participation level.
- - Widespread Enrollment: The pilot saw a remarkable 100% enrollment from site hosts without any opt-outs, signifying the project's broad appeal and impact.
- - Community Impact: Significantly, 42% of the funding allocated for new installations was directed towards environmental justice communities, illustrating a commitment to equitable resource distribution.
PURA Vice Chairman
David Arconti, Jr. remarked, “The IES Program was designed to unearth innovations that yield tangible advantages for Connecticut’s ratepayers, and AmpUp’s initiative epitomizes such innovation.” He noted that the project has illustrated how public EV charging can act as a flexible grid resource at significantly lower costs compared to conventional peaking resources, setting a promising precedent for a more resilient and affordable grid amid escalating EV adoption.
David Jackson, COO of AmpUp, emphasized, “Managed charging had historically been limited to private garages and individual utility setups. Our project exemplifies its potential at public charging stations where drivers lack direct utility connections. Our achievement as the only Cycle 1 pilot selected to scale reinforces our team’s commitment and collaboration with Eversource and PURA, as well as the adaptability of Connecticut drivers.”
The findings from this initiative further substantiate previous insights from September 2025, confirming that AmpUp's approach yielded grid relief thrice as efficient compared to standard peaking facilities. The full PURA decision is available for those interested in the comprehensive evaluation of this groundbreaking project.
