Research Highlights the State of AI Readiness in Higher Education Worldwide
University AI Readiness: A Call for Action
In a striking revelation, the recent report, From Ambition to Adoption: Insights into University AI Readiness from Around the World, has brought to light critical findings about the level of Artificial Intelligence (AI) preparedness in higher education institutions worldwide. Released by IREX and Development Gateway, the report drew insights from a comprehensive global survey conducted from November 2025 to January 2026, aiming to assess how universities integrate AI into various operational facets such as teaching, research, and administration.
Despite the evident enthusiasm for AI's transformative potential in education, the report indicates that many universities are lagging significantly in their readiness to adopt AI technologies effectively. Remarkably, only one-third of the surveyed institutions have developed a clear AI strategy, and fewer than 20% possess governance frameworks to manage AI responsibly. These statistics suggest a critical misalignment; while universities are racing to embrace AI, they remain perilously ill-equipped to harness it effectively.
Insights from the Survey
The survey revealed that even though 37% of respondents have received ongoing AI training or professional development, this number still highlights a widespread gap in AI literacy and application readiness across the sector. Josh Powell, CEO of Development Gateway, emphasized the dual challenge facing educational institutions: the need to leverage AI to improve teaching outcomes while navigating the complexities of ethical usage and preparing a workforce ready for an AI-driven future.
