Seoul National University Hospital Enhances Global K-Bio Engagement at BIO USA 2026
Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) is set to make a significant move in establishing K-Bio’s presence on the global stage during the much-anticipated BIO International Convention 2026, taking place from June 22 to 25 in San Diego, California. This prestigious event is recognized as the largest gathering in the biotechnology industry, attracting participants from across the globe to explore collaboration opportunities and foster investments in groundbreaking biotech innovations.
SNUH will operate its first-ever independent booth at the convention, marking a pivotal moment for the institution as it promotes its mission of supporting promising bio startups and showcasing its cutting-edge research in digital health data. The event is expected to draw in over 20,000 professionals from more than 76 nations, highlighting its importance as a platform for discussing advancements in biotechnology.
Focused on demonstrating Korea's unique capabilities within the biotechnology space, SNUH intends to present its successful startup incubation model, emphasizing the technological strengths and commercialization potentials of Korean bio companies. This initiative not only aims to capture the attention of international investors and academic institutions but also to promote the K-Bio ecosystem's expansion.
Throughout the event, SNUH plans to feature five exemplary bio startups that have received support from the hospital. These firms include HTnB and MEDIARK, both part of the Global Bio Scale-Up Enterprise Advancement Transformation (G.R.E.A.T) project, as well as SNUH-affiliated companies such as RSREHAB, Idea2Market, and CENYXBIOTECH. The G.R.E.A.T project, with a funding of 12.6 billion KRW and a duration of six years, has been instrumental in supporting nascent bio companies, facilitating their growth, technology advancement, and global ventures.
Highlighted among these startups, MEDIARK is pioneering gene therapies utilizing advanced metal-organic framework technology for nucleic acid delivery, while HTnB focuses on developing innovative dental biomaterials and radioprotective agents. Likewise, RSREHAB is advancing rehabilitation devices designed for treating dysphagia, while Idea2Market works on digital health tech based on biosignal analytics. CENYXBIOTECH is dedicated to next-generation therapeutics leveraging a unique nanozyme platform.
SNUH is prepared to aid these innovative companies by orchestrating global business development meetings, creating networking opportunities with investors, and facilitating potential partnerships with international entities. The overarching goal is to assist these Korean bio startups in identifying collaborators within the U.S. and broader global markets, enhancing their prospects for securing investments and advancing their technologies.
In addition to its startup initiatives, SNUH is eager to highlight its research prowess in digital health data, an area it has been advancing significantly since its designation as Korea's first National Strategic Technology Specialized Research Institute in 2024. During the convention, SNUH will introduce the Korea Health Data Platform (KHDP), a project aiming to create a global research platform to maximize the utility of digital health information for collaborative studies with worldwide partnerships.
Following the convention, SNUH will extend its outreach by hosting a related event on June 26 in the U.S., in collaboration with Korea Technology Finance Corporation and Shinhan Financial Group. This event will feature investment showcases from notable biotech ventures, expert-led seminars, and panel discussions aimed at further enhancing global collaboration within the K-Bio sector. An added feature will be an educational seminar linked to Stanford Biodesign, designed to equip companies with strategies for effectively navigating global markets and crafting new business opportunities grounded in addressing unmet needs in healthcare.
SNUH’s independent presence at BIO USA and its associated events are representative of a significant transformation, showcasing the hospital's commitment to evolving beyond traditional patient care and research roles. The focus is on fostering innovation by empowering bio startups, facilitating technology commercialization, and building interconnected global partnerships.
Reflecting on this initiative, SNUH President Nam-Jong Paik emphasized the necessity for a synergistic ecosystem involving academia, industry, research institutions, and hospitals. By championing the resultant technologies and businesses, SNUH aims to harness these advancements to contribute to Korea's future economic growth. Sung-Keun Kwon, the Executive Vice President for Research at SNUH, reiterated the hospital's active role in positioning itself as a leader in aiding the growth of promising Korean bio companies and showcasing its exceptional research capabilities to the international community.
