In recent years, declining voter turnout among young people and diminishing interest in political and community affairs have surfaced as pressing social challenges. Despite this, many youths possess opinions about their communities but face barriers in voicing those concerns. They often express feelings of uncertainty about where to direct their views or the belief that their voices may not lead to actual change. To address these issues, the Chiyoda Youth Council has launched the innovative digital platform known as Chiyoda Next Voice. Inspired by Taiwan's award-winning civic participation initiative, JOIN, this web application allows young individuals in the Chiyoda Ward to share local issues and suggestions.

Bridging the Gap Between Youth and Governance

The overarching mission of Chiyoda Next Voice is to help younger generations actively participate in civic engagement by visualizing their concerns and connecting them with local government. The application enables users to submit proposals regarding community issues or improvements and facilitates feedback from peers who can comment or 'like' these suggestions.

To mark its rollout, Chiyoda Next Voice hosted workshops in July at local middle and high schools, encouraging students to explore community problems, devise policy suggestions, and seek real engagement with authorities. By gathering at least 180 'likes' on submitted proposals by the end of August, these suggestions will route to appropriate governmental agencies for response.

Workshops for the Next Generation

These workshops aim not only to gather ideas but also to educate participants about their roles as stakeholders in society. Students learn to identify issues within their community, form proposals, and approach consensus-building. By actually crafting and posting their suggestions on Chiyoda Next Voice, students experience the satisfaction of having their voices recognized and their ideas acknowledged.
