MemorialCare's Commitment to Sustainability
MemorialCare, a premier healthcare provider in Southern California, has once again proven its dedication to sustainability by winning the Energy to Care (E2C) Awards from the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE). For the second consecutive year, the organization has achieved this prestigious recognition for six of its locations, while 18 facilities received the Sustained Performance Award. This acknowledgment underscores the exceptional efforts of MemorialCare in energy management and sustainable practices within the healthcare sector.
Acknowledging Unique Challenges
As John Somers, MemorialCare's vice president of real estate and facilities, explains, healthcare facilities operate continuously and encounter unique challenges, including single-use waste and aging infrastructure. Despite these obstacles, MemorialCare embraces these challenges as opportunities for innovation in energy efficiency. Somers states, "We're proud to reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to a healthier planet—because caring for our communities goes beyond patient care."
Award-Winning Locations
In Long Beach, the three locations associated with MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center— the hospital itself, Buffum Medical Pavilion, and Columbia Medical Building—received the Energy to Care Award. In Orange County, the MemorialCare headquarters office, MemorialCare Medical Foundation in Los Altos, and MemorialCare Cancer Institute at Saddleback Medical Center also earned recognition.
These achievements reflect MemorialCare's unwavering commitment to reducing energy consumption and advancing environmentally responsible practices across its health network.
Driven by Innovation
The awards are part of MemorialCare’s Climate Health Initiative developed in partnership with Ecom-Energy, Inc. This initiative emphasizes innovative approaches and technologies that not only improve energy efficiency but also reduce operational costs. As a testament to their progress, the 18 locations that garnered the Sustained Performance Award have maintained exemplary energy management practices for over two consecutive years, solidifying MemorialCare's reputation as a leader in sustainability.
ASHE's Role in Recognition
The Energy to Care Awards, administered by ASHE, aim to encourage best practices in energy management across the healthcare sector. Evaluation criteria includes energy usage reduction, adoption of innovative technologies, and the overall impact on sustainability. MemorialCare's achievements highlight its commitment to leading by example, as the organization continues to invest in sustainable practices and innovative technologies to minimize its environmental footprint.
