Bay Area Celebrates Incredible Cycling Momentum On Bike to Wherever Day

Bay Area Bikes Everywhere on Bike to Wherever Day

On May 14, 2026, the Bay Area experienced a remarkable celebration of cycling for the annual Bike to Wherever Day, which showcased the region's vibrant cycling community. This flagship event, part of the wider Bay Area Bike to Wherever Days initiative and the month-long Bay Area Bike Challenge, saw an unprecedented turnout as cyclists from all nine counties participated in this heartfelt movement.

Record Participation

Riders turned out in droves, with tens of thousands hitting the streets to embrace cycling as a sustainable, active mode of transportation. Nearly 20,000 cyclists fueled up at over 340 Energizer Stations during the morning when they received free coffee, snacks, and exclusive merchandise, including this year's signature tote bag featuring unique artwork commemorating the event. The Energizer Stations, staffed by major corporations, local agencies, and dedicated volunteers, served as lively hubs contributing to the overall success of the day.

While these stations primarily operated during the morning rush hour, many continued their festivities through the evening and weekend with events like Bike Block Parties and Happy Hours. A complete map detailing the Energizer Stations was made available online, ensuring that all participants could join in the fun at their convenience.

Voices of the Community

Marcella Aranda, a public information officer from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and project manager for Bike to Wherever Days, expressed her admiration for the turnout: "The energy and enthusiasm of riders across the entire region is continuously astounding. This success is a testament to our passionate cyclists and dedicated community partners. We aim to uplift year-round cycling while showing everyone they can incorporate biking into their daily routines." Her words resonated with many, highlighting the collective passion for promoting cycling as a practical and enjoyable transit solution.

Local officials and influential community leaders actively took part in the festivities by leading ceremonial rides and bike rallies in cities such as San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley. High-profile participants included elected officials from various counties, showcasing a united front in support of cycling initiatives.

The Pledge to Ride

Thousands of individuals signed the Pledge to Ride, committing to prioritizing cycling throughout the month of May. This inspiring pledge emphasized the environmental health benefits of cycling and called for safer, more vibrant streets. Participants pledged, "I will bike for my own health, clean air, and in support of safer and more vibrant streets. Whether I'm riding just one day or every day of the month – every trip makes a difference."

The Bay Area Bike Challenge has already registered nearly 900 riders, who have collectively logged an astonishing 70,000 miles across over 7,000 trips, working towards a regional target of 175,000 miles. To encourage participation, MTC announced several exciting prizes, including:
  • - Two $500 awards for the riders with the most trips completed and the most miles recorded.
  • - Two $250 awards for the most creative routes based on interesting shapes and landmarks.
  • - Eight raffle prizes ranging from $100 to $200, giving every participant a chance to win something special.

With the challenge running through the end of May, the participation momentum continues to build as riders strive to reach both personal milestones and collaborative targets.

Organizing Entities

Bay Area Bike to Wherever Days is proudly presented by MTC, the planning and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area, in collaboration with 511, an information service for travelers in the region, and Amazon. The Bay Area Air District and organizations like Bike East Bay, Marin County Bicycle Coalition, and others also provided support, ensuring the events were well-coordinated and impactful. Prizes celebrating the Bike Champion of the Year were generously donated by key sponsors, including MTC and local businesses like Sports Basement and Mike's Bikes.

As the Bay Area embraces cycling not just on Bike to Wherever Day but throughout the month, the hope is that this enthusiasm fosters a lasting culture of biking—creating healthier, cleaner communities in the process.
