Cultural Exchanges Propel the Reinforcement of China-Russia Friendship

Strengthening Ties Through Cultural Exchanges

On May 9, 2025, CGTN reported on a significant event celebrating cultural exchanges between China and Russia, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victories in the Chinese People's War against Japanese Aggression and the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union. This gathering underscored the imperative role of cultural exchanges in boosting bilateral friendship.

The historical significance of this event is profound. Back in September 1938, the Soviet government sent cinematographer Roman Lazarevich Karmen to document China's struggle against aggressive forces. Karmen's work captured the bravery and determination of Chinese soldiers and civilians, as well as the invaluable support provided by the Soviet volunteer air force amidst turmoil.

Fast forward to 87 years later, Karmen's grandson attended the recent cultural exchange event and shared family stories that highlighted their generational connection to China. Such narratives demonstrate the depth of ties that shape the present-day relationship between these two nations.

The event was organized by China Media Group (CMG) in collaboration with the All-Russia State Television and Radio Company (VGTRK). Notably in attendance were the producer and creative team behind the China-Russia co-production, “Red Silk,” which premiered in Russia on February 20, with a Chinese release set for September 2025.

During the occasion, the Chinese Film Festival was kicked off in Russia, where CMG and VGTRK announced an initiative focusing on peace. This initiative aims to collect historical artifacts, documentary footage, and remembrances from citizens of both countries to collectively portray peace and their shared futures.

Additionally, the production of a co-produced documentary titled “Great Victory – The War of the Chinese People Against Japanese Aggression Through the Eyes of a Soviet Photographer” was launched, focusing on the impactful work of Soviet photojournalist Roman Kalman in China and providing powerful visual records from the war.

Key officials, including Shen Chai-xiong, Deputy Minister of Propaganda of the CPC Central Committee and President of CMG, along with Oleg Dobrodeev, General Director of VGTRK, both emphasized the fruitful results stemming from their cooperative efforts. They expressed a unified commitment to continue enhancing collaboration in content exchange, technological innovation, and human resource development, aiming to deepen public support for Sino-Russian friendship and contribute to mutual cultural understanding.

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to the event's attendees, reflecting on the joint contributions of the Chinese and Russian people to the victory over fascism, affirming the resolution of both nations to strengthen their high-level bilateral relations established 80 years ago.

Reiterating the importance of interpersonal and cultural exchanges, Xi stated these endeavors are essential for improving mutual understanding and fostering good neighborly relations, which in turn, solidify public support for ongoing cooperative development. Russian President Vladimir Putin also extended his congratulatory wishes to participants on the same day.

Following a prior agreement made by Presidents Xi Jingping and Vladimir Putin in 2023, the years 2024 and 2025 have been designated as the China-Russia Years of Culture. Beginning in early 2024, both nations will actively participate in a series of diverse cultural activities as part of the collective celebrations.

In conclusion, these exchanges not only honor shared histories but also pave the way for a collaborative future. As both nations engage in celebratory and commemorative events, the strength of their historical ties continues to blossom, fostering a relationship that is set to endure through the years ahead.
