Strengthening Academia-Industry Cooperation for Semiconductor Engineers in Kumamoto
On December 9, Nikken Total Sourcing conducted a hands-on semiconductor engineer training for 40 first-year students from the Mechanical Department of Kumamoto Prefectural Tamana Technical High School. This initiative reflects the company's commitment to creating possibilities through diverse human capital solutions in the growing semiconductor industry in Kumamoto.
In response to a surge in semiconductor-related companies entering the region, Kumamoto University recently announced partnerships with other institutions to develop talent in this sector. The collaboration between industry, government, and academia is rapidly taking shape to tackle the growing demand for skilled workers.
In 2023, Nikken Total Sourcing expanded the Kumamoto Tech Center, transforming it into a dedicated facility for semiconductor education. The center focuses on nurturing professionals equipped with practical skills for troubleshooting and process improvements. Unique training equipment, developed in-house and patented by the company for semiconductor transport simulation, has also been incorporated into the curriculum.
The hands-on training conducted at Tamana Technical High School involved direct interaction with equipment and tools used in real industry settings. Participants engaged in maintenance exercises, pneumatic circuit studies, and LED lighting circuit creation, guided by professionals from the Kumamoto Tech Center.
Student Feedback
Students shared their experiences after the training, highlighting the valuable knowledge gained. One remarked, “Before participating, I didn’t have a detailed understanding of machinery maintenance, but the hands-on experience was incredibly rewarding. I find the job of machine repair and maintenance fascinating and fulfilling.” Another noted, “Maintenance work is crucial for safety, and I realized its importance through practical learning on techniques such as tightening screws and controlling air pressure. Consistent and careful inspection is essential.”
