Amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, a historic ryokan, Izunagaoka Onsen Sumiyoshi-kan, is getting ready to welcome guests once again, thanks to a significant revival project spearheaded by Unwaikai Inc., based in Chiyoda, Tokyo. With renovations and operational systems now complete, the ryokan is set to commence trial operations on October 15, 2025.

Background of the Revival

Izunagaoka Onsen has a rich history that spans around 1300 years, making it one of Japan's most revered hot spring areas. The Sumiyoshi-kan ryokan, situated alongside the serene Kano River, has long captivated visitors with its tranquil atmosphere and traditional architectural beauty, complemented by a picturesque garden home to around 200 koi fish.

However, the pandemic severely impacted tourism, leading to a drastic decline in visitors and forcing the treasured ryokan to close its doors. This closure not only affected the ryokan but also caused a significant loss to the tourism landscape and local economy of the entire Izu region.

Recognizing this situation, Unwaikai took it upon itself to restore this lost cultural asset and contribute to the sustainable development of the local community. The company utilized its extensive tourism expertise and on-ground experience to implement a revival plan that aligns closely with local realities.

In this endeavor, Unwaikai consulted regional innkeepers and former management from the ryokan to ensure a collaborative approach to the revival. The establishment of a dedicated 'Accommodation Division' also took place, staffed with industry experts to oversee the preparation and management, thus ensuring the successful resurrection of Sumiyoshi-kan.

Operational Structure

The operational framework of Sumiyoshi-kan will respect local culture and traditions while maintaining strong oversight from Unwaikai's headquarters. This hybrid structure allows for day-to-day operations to be managed autonomously but under firm guidance. Through a system of regular reporting and weekly checks, the aim is to establish a sustainable and efficient operational model.

For human resource placements, an expert in hot spring ryokan management, who hails from Izu, has been appointed as general manager, while the deputy manager will be the former president who oversaw the ryokan during its closure due to the pandemic. Their shared understanding of the ryokan's history and spirit is pivotal to the revival effort.

Additionally, the culinary aspect will be led by a chef who is also the president of the renowned Cooking Association, focusing on blending traditional techniques with contemporary flavors to deliver an unforgettable dining experience.

In terms of staffing, Sumiyoshi-kan will embrace diversity by including personnel from Vietnam and China to facilitate enriching customer interactions in multiple languages while ensuring that the Japanese hospitality standard remains intact.

The ryokan’s dining approach will offer a clear menu, featuring a “casual ryokan kaiseki” for dinner priced at 3,300 yen and a “Japanese-style set menu” for breakfast at 1,200 yen, ensuring quality while maintaining efficient service.

A Focus on Pricing and Accessibility

The overnight accommodation price will range from 10,000 to 25,000 yen per person, inclusive of two meals, determined by room size and amenities, making it an affordable yet exquisite option for guests. Reservations will be managed centrally from Unwaikai’s headquarters and major booking platforms to enhance customer convenience and operational efficiency.

For inbound tourism, accommodations will focus on groups in select premium rooms while also being able to cater to individual travelers from both domestic and international markets.
