Tea Horse Road Romance: A World of Intangible Cultural Heritage from Yunnan, China
Overview of the Exhibition
In the Autumn of 2025, the Japan-China Friendship Museum is set to host a special exhibition titled "Tea Horse Road Romance: A World of Intangible Cultural Heritage from Yunnan, China." This event is co-organized with the Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, and it focuses on the intangible cultural heritage associated with the areas along the Tea Horse Road, including Dali and Shangri-la. The exhibition will feature around 150 items showcasing traditional crafts, techniques, and tools from this vibrant region, split into two parts to offer a wider variety.
History and Significance of the Tea Horse Road
The Tea Horse Road, often referred to as the "Southern Silk Road," boasts a trading history of approximately 1,300 years. Originating from Sichuan Province, this ancient trade route extends through Yunnan (historically known as the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms), Tibet, and continues on to Nepal, India, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Historically, it played a crucial role by facilitating the transportation of essential goods like tea leaves and horses across challenging mountainous terrains averaging over 2,500 meters in elevation. It acted as a cultural melting pot, allowing for exchanges in religion, art, and traditions between diverse communities.
Ancient Chinese techniques fused with the local customs to create a unique cultural landscape that continues to flourish today. Craftsmen in the region produce a variety of beautiful artisanal items that reflect this heritage.
