Sungrow Unveils PowerTitan 3.0, a Cutting-Edge Grid-Forming Utility Storage System in Madrid

Sungrow Launches PowerTitan 3.0 in Madrid

On February 4, 2026, Sungrow, a global leader in photovoltaic (PV) inverters and energy storage systems (ESS), introduced significant innovations at the PV ESS Summit held in Madrid. The spotlight was on the company’s latest offering, the PowerTitan 3.0, a utility-scale energy storage system specifically designed to facilitate the transition to sustainable energy in Europe.

The summit, which witnessed the participation of over 300 industry partners and experts— including representatives from SolarPower Europe, TÜV, and DEKRA— focused on emerging technologies and market trends essential for the evolution of the energy sector. James Li, Vice President for Sungrow Europe’s ESS division, emphasized Europe’s importance as a strategic market for Sungrow. He stated, “In 2026, we continue to strengthen our commitment to Europe with a robust local service infrastructure.”

The Importance of Energy Storage

According to SolarPower Europe (SPE), the cumulative photovoltaic capacity in the EU reached 406 GW in 2025. This surge in renewable energy integration presents several challenges, including grid congestion and limited production capacities. SPE predicts that by 2030, the need for flexibility in electrical demand will soar up to 40%, making large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) deployment essential. In 2025 alone, over 26 GWh of BESS were installed, surpassing the capacity allocated to residential applications. The anticipated annual growth rate of BESS is expected to reach 30%, targeting 412 GWh by the end of the decade.

Innovations of PowerTitan 3.0

The PowerTitan 3.0 is crafted to tackle the complexities associated with modern energy systems. It features a single 20-foot container that houses 1.78 MW of Power Conversion System (PCS) and 7.14 MWh of batteries, suitable for 4-hour configurations with a total capacity of 7.2 MW / 28.5 MWh. The system utilizes vertically-stacked battery cells exceeding 600 Ah, which can support energy storage durations between 2 to 8 hours.

The efficiency of the PowerTitan 3.0 is noteworthy, achieving a system round-trip efficiency (RTE) of 92%. The unit is factory pre-installed and commissioned, featuring an architecture that allows for self-configuration and testing in under an hour—enabling the deployment of a 1 GWh project in just 12 days. Its operational capabilities extend to extreme temperatures, functioning effectively up to -40°C—ideal for northern and alpine regions as well as coastal, humid environments.

Integrated DC-Coupled Solutions

Alongside the PowerTitan 3.0, Sungrow presented a unified platform architecture for DC-coupled PV-ESS solutions. This integrated system includes:
  • - A modular 1+X inverter with a dedicated storage interface
  • - The PowerTitan 3.0 featuring a DC/DC module
  • - An in-house developed PV-ESS Synergy management system
This architecture is designed to support discharge durations of up to 8 hours and offers a flexible power ratio of 100%, while optimizing system cost.

The Role of Grid-Forming Technologies

Grid-forming technology has surfaced as a key element for stable and resilient electrical systems. At the summit, Dr. Henry Liu, Director of Sungrow's Grid Solution department, highlighted the growing importance of such technologies in supporting the grids that rely predominantly on renewable energy sources. Sungrow exhibited its critical capabilities, which include:
  • - Voltage and frequency support
  • - Damping oscillations
  • - Capability for GW-scale black start
  • - Strengthening grid robustness
These competencies have been validated by landmark projects, including a 7.8 GWh initiative in Saudi Arabia, touted as the largest grid-forming storage system worldwide.

Local Expertise and Global Reach

Since 2011, Sungrow has established a strong presence in Europe, operating through 25 local offices, 2 R&D centers, 26 warehouses, and 3 training centers with its European headquarters in Munich, Germany. Notable projects include one of continental Europe's largest BESS installations in Belgium (800 MWh), the Bramley ESS project in the UK (330 MWh), and a 70 MW solar project in Finland.

Conclusion

With over 29 years in renewable energy technology development, Sungrow is committed to providing sustainable solutions worldwide. By June 2025, it had successfully installed 870 GW of power electronics, earning recognition as a market-leading provider of PV inverters and storage solutions. Sungrow’s promise is a commitment to shaping a sustainable future through innovation and exceptional service. For more information, visit Sungrow's official website.
