CMG Launches Expert Committee on South China Sea Studies
On March 29, China Media Group (CMG) introduced the Expert Committee on South China Sea Studies in Sanya, Hainan Province. This initiative aims to gather insights from distinguished experts to promote peace and stability in the region. The Committee includes 28 leading professionals from various prominent institutions, such as the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology and the National Institute for South China Sea Studies. Its purpose is to contribute rational and objective analysis regarding the ongoing issues in the South China Sea.
Objectives and Composition of the Committee
Wu Shicun, a member of the Committee and Chairman of the Huayang Research Center for Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance, stated that the collaboration aims to enhance policy discussions and intellectual exchanges on marine issues in the South China Sea. By pooling together expertise from diverse backgrounds, the Committee intends to address complex regional matters effectively and collaboratively.
Another notable member, Ong Tee Keat, who is also the former Minister of Transport in Malaysia, emphasized how China-ASEAN cooperation has become a successful paradigm for regional integration and multilateral engagement. He noted that the establishment of the Committee represents a timely initiative in light of current geopolitical dynamics, as it could pave the way for further cooperative efforts among Southeast Asian nations.
Peter T.C. Chang, a visiting senior fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore and another member of the Committee, highlighted the importance of Southeast Asian nations independently asserting their regional destinies. He reiterated the need for an
