Detroit Embraces Innovative EV Charging with it's electric Partnership for Curbside Solutions

Detroit's Innovative EV Charging Initiative

In a significant leap towards enhanced sustainable transportation, Detroit proudly unveils its inaugural curbside electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, thanks to a collaboration with the innovative startup it's electric. This initiative, first explored through the Detroit Smart Parking Lab in 2022, marks a milestone in the Motor City’s journey towards modernizing its urban infrastructure.

Official Launch
The recent ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by key figures in the city's government and transportation sectors, including Nathan King, the CEO of it's electric. During the event, King emphasized the importance of this launch.

“Today marks a major milestone for Detroit and the future of transportation within cities,” he stated. “It’s quite meaningful to cut today’s ribbon, as it was in Detroit, with the support of so many interested partners, that we first prototyped and received our earliest funding.”

This groundbreaking collaboration involves various stakeholders, including the Michigan Office of Future Mobility, Michigan Central, and DTE Energy. Together, they aim to address the pressing need for efficient infrastructure to support the city's growing EV market.

The Role of Partners
Tim Slusser, Chief of Detroit's Office of Mobility Innovation, highlighted the collaborative effort from numerous entities to bring this project to fruition.

“This project is a great example of the innovation we aim to foster,” Slusser said, reflecting on the community efforts that led to the successful installation of the first curbside chargers.

Kevin Mull, Senior Director of Urban Strategy and Innovation at Bedrock, echoed this sentiment.

“It's electric is a great addition to DSPL's list of graduates as it deploys its technology right outside its doors,” he mentioned, underlining the importance of innovation hubs like these in accelerating the deployment of new technologies.

Unique EV Charging Solutions
The initial wave of curbside charging stations comes with a visionary approach, pioneered by it's electric. Their stations feature sleek, compact designs which not only save space but also integrate seamlessly into the urban landscape. Initially, the charging stations will be located at the Detroit Smart Parking Lab, with expansion plans in place for 25 additional locations by 2025 based on community requests.

Funding for this visionary initiative is supported through grants from DTE Energy's Emerging Tech Fund, which aims to aid EV innovators. Neal Foley, Director of Electric Marketing at DTE Energy, shared his excitement for the project, stating that it is just the beginning.

Impact on the Community
The vision for these curbside chargers goes beyond merely providing electric outlets; it’s about fostering a sustainable ecosystem where building owners can benefit financially, and residents have easy access to EV charging. It’s electric handles the entire installation and maintenance process at no cost to the municipalities or property owners, thereby minimizing barriers to entry for both urban residents and businesses.

Justine Johnson, Michigan's Chief Mobility Officer, expressed pride in the state’s approach to support innovations that improve EV accessibility and infrastructure.

“it's electric's contributions to Michigan's mobility ecosystem are a shining example of how the state's proactive approach to supporting innovative startups is positively impacting the accessibility of EV charging,” she remarked.

Future Prospects
As it's electric sets its sights on future expansions, building owners and local residents are encouraged to participate by joining the waitlist through the it's electric app, which facilitates broader access to charging options. The strategy prioritizes deployment in neighborhoods identified as having the highest demand for charging infrastructure, ensuring that the benefits of the transition to electric vehicles are felt across the city.

In conclusion, Detroit's initiative marks a proactive stance towards enhancing the city's infrastructure to accommodate the rising trend of electric transport. Through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions, it promises to pave the way for a more sustainable future, solidifying Detroit's place as a leader in urban mobility innovation.
