Inauguration of Innovation Oasis and AgriTech Academy in Al Ain by Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed
On April 24, 2025, His Highness Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan presided over the inauguration of two pivotal facilities in the Al Ain region: the Innovation Oasis (iO) and the Advance AgriTech Academy. These groundbreaking institutions are set to revolutionize agricultural technology and education in the UAE, contributing significantly to the nation's food security and sustainability initiatives.
Innovation Oasis, a state-of-the-art research and development facility, aims to foster advancements in agricultural practices through innovative technology. It aligns with the UAE's National Food Security Strategy 2051, reflecting the commitment to elevate local agriculture and strengthen food security against global challenges. During the ceremony, Sheikh Hazza highlighted the pressing need for sustainable farming approaches, particularly in the face of climate change and increasing population demands.
The Advance AgriTech Academy complements this vision by focusing on the next generation of leaders in the agricultural tech sector. This academy is designed to equip Emirati youth with essential skills through specialized programs in career guidance and practical training. Collaborations with international research institutions will enhance the educational experience, ensuring that students are well-prepared to lead in this critical field.
An important facet of the ceremony included the signing of a cooperation agreement between Silal, the organization behind these initiatives, and the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). This partnership is poised to enhance agricultural research and innovation, with a significant component being the provision of five scholarships to students majoring in Agriculture at UAEU, aimed at empowering future agricultural experts with the tools they need to thrive.
Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed emphasized the strategic importance of investing in agricultural technology research. He pointed out that enhancing local production capabilities and employing advanced technology is essential to an economy centered around knowledge and innovation. The Sheikh reaffirmed the commitment to bolstering food supply chains, which is a fundamental consideration in light of both regional and global challenges related to food security.
The Innovation Oasis spans over 300,000 square meters, designed as a collaborative ecosystem where researchers, industry professionals, startups, and academic scholars converge. This facility is expected to be an incubator for innovative agricultural technologies and methodologies. Key research areas will include climate-resilient farming techniques, optimised controlled environment agriculture, and methods to produce food more efficiently while conserving resources.
Additionally, the facility is equipped with top-tier laboratories, growth chambers, and extensive experimental settings, such as greenhouses and open-field research plots. These resources will facilitate the development and testing of pioneering agritech solutions tailored to the unique climatic challenges of the UAE, including high temperatures and water scarcity.
Specific technological focuses will include IoT-enabled precision farming to enhance water usage in agriculture, exploring solar thermal desalination for sustainable water sourcing, and breeding salt-resistant crops suited for local conditions. The incorporation of AI-driven systems will additionally leverage machine learning and robotics, improving management practices on the farm and throughout the supply chain, thereby minimizing food wastage.
As Sheikh Hazza noted during the inauguration, the establishment of the Innovation Oasis and the Advance AgriTech Academy signifies a bold step forward in the UAE's quest to remain at the forefront of global agricultural innovations. As the nation continues to confront the challenges of food production and security, these initiatives epitomize a forward-thinking approach to harnessing technology for sustainable agriculture and enhancing national pride in Emirati talent—a crucial element in shaping the future of the UAE’s agricultural landscape.
