Home Depot Foundation Increases Veteran Support Commitment to $1 Billion by 2032

In an ambitious step to combat veteran homelessness, the Home Depot Foundation has announced an increase in its financial commitment to $1 billion by the year 2032. This pledge aims to formulate and enhance innovative housing solutions specifically targeted at addressing the needs of veterans. Since 2011, the Foundation has significantly contributed over $650 million to improve more than 70,000 veteran homes and facilities, directly impacting the lives of many veterans across the nation.

Currently, approximately 33,000 veterans are homeless each night, while another 2.75 million live in inadequate housing conditions. The Foundation's expanded commitment addresses both immediate and long-term housing challenges faced by veterans, aiming to transform uncertainties into long-term stability. "Every veteran deserves a safe place to call home," stated Erin Izen, Executive Director of the Home Depot Foundation.

Over the past 15 years, the Foundation has effectively reduced veteran homelessness by over 50%. Their efforts include expanding access to supportive housing and collaborating with various organizations such as Volunteers of America, Habitat for Humanity, and the Gary Sinise Foundation to provide essential housing repairs and modifications for disabled veterans. Recently, the Foundation has initiated strategies aimed at tackling the systemic causes of housing insecurity among veterans through a national summit that convened nonprofit partners and industry leaders.

Key among these initiatives is the formation of the Landlords, Organizations, and Veterans Engagement (LOVE) Fund, which aims to remove rental barriers such as security deposits and application fees, thus facilitating smoother transitions to housing for veterans. Additionally, resources are being directed towards preventing homelessness by offering support for transitional housing repairs and upgrades through partnerships with organizations like Operation Homefront.

Darryl Vincent, President and CEO of U.S.VETS, emphasized the importance of innovative solutions like the master leasing program. This approach helps veterans navigate the competitive rental market by providing them access to affordable housing, a significant hurdle many face in their journey towards stability.

As part of its annual Celebration of Service campaign, the Foundation's announcement coincided with ongoing efforts to mobilize nationwide support. Teams across all 50 states and three U.S. territories are actively participating in projects supporting veterans, reaffirming Home Depot's commitment to those who have served. One notable project involved building a fully accessible modular home for Marine veteran James
