Transforming Mo:take STUDIO's Balcony into a Garden for a Sustainable Food Cycle

Creating a Sustainable Urban Garden

Yuinchu Co., Ltd., based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, has reimagined the balcony of its kitchen studio, Mo:take STUDIO in Daikanyama, into a vibrant garden that embodies the ethos of "growing, eating, and returning to the soil". This innovative project provides urban residents with an experiential space where they can engage with the vital connections between food and the environment.

The revitalization of the balcony aligns with Yuinchu's commitment to fostering awareness about the environmental impact of food systems. Globally, food production contributes approximately one-third of all human-made greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the urgent necessity of rethinking our food sources and their environmental implications. In Japan, emissions from agriculture and livestock account for around 4.4% of total greenhouse gases as of 2020, as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Yuinchu aims to bridge this knowledge gap by offering hands-on experiences that allow individuals to feel a connection with the environment through food. They have already implemented catering programs that visualize small-scale food cycles and are now bringing this philosophy to life in a dynamic urban setting.

An Interactive Space for Learning and Connection

Mo:take STUDIO serves not only as a food development hub but also as a rental space for cooking classes, tastings, and as a filming studio. With the upgrade to a garden, the studio's balcony has transformed into a living space where people can witness and participate in the food cycle through seasonal changes. Numerous planters now house organic vegetables and herbs, illustrating the connection between food production and environmental consciousness.

In a remarkable initiative, kitchen waste produced during daily studio operations is composted and converted into nutrient-rich soil, which in turn nurtures the plants. This closed-loop system not only minimizes waste but also promotes awareness of sustainable practices in urban environments.

Thanks to the collaboration with FARM SPOT, a project dedicated to creating spaces based on composting principles, the garden's design, setup, and cultivation guidance have been made possible. This cooperation exemplifies how people can engage with nature, even within the confines of a city, and embody a lifestyle that nurtures smaller cycles of sustainability.

A Taste of Freshness: The Connection to Nature

Visitors to Mo:take STUDIO can engage in the delightful experience of harvesting and tasting organic produce directly from the garden. The sensation of crunchy vegetables, the sweetness of freshly picked herbs, and their intoxicating aromas provide an unparalleled dining experience that can only be had with freshly picked ingredients. This not only enhances the sensory experience of tasting but also promotes an understanding of seasonal changes through the growth process of the garden.

The upgrade of the space reflects an essential social action aimed at demonstrating a company’s commitment to environmental and societal values through tangible practices. By updating the studio in this manner, Yuinchu hopes to inspire other rental space operators to transform their venues into environments that impart meaningful experiences while conveying important messages to their audiences.

“Transforming spaces from functional use to experiences that resonate with people’s values is crucial,” says Masashi Ono, the CEO of Yuinchu. “We're committed to creating value-driven environments that enhance our relationship with food and the environment.”

Yuinchu extends an invitation to companies and organizations that resonate with their vision of blending multiple elements for innovative space creation. They provide support in planning and managing spaces that reflect their clients' research and brand advocacy.

Continual Commitment to Sustainable Development

Yuinchu’s mission is to continuously contribute valuable spaces rooted in food, with a focus on fostering social connections through these experiences. They encourage anyone interested in this revolutionary approach to reach out and explore the possibilities of cultivating meaningful relationships through food and its environmental impacts.
