Skanska Engages in Preconstruction for SPARC Project in NYC, Worth $59 Million

Skanska Preconstruction Services for SPARC Project

In a major development for urban educational facilities, Skanska has signed a preliminary contract with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to initiate preconstruction and deconstruction services for the SPARC (Science Park and Research Campus) project located in Kips Bay, New York. This contract, valued at an impressive $59 million (approximately SEK 650 million), marks a significant entry in Skanska’s US order bookings for the first quarter of 2025.

The SPARC project aims to transform the existing CUNY Hunter College Brookdale campus by introducing modern educational facilities that cater to both the City University of New York (CUNY) and New York City Public Schools (NYCPS). The ambitious first phase of this development is set to encompass over 55,700 square meters (or 600,000 square feet) of state-of-the-art educational spaces, along with SPARC Square—a new public space designed to promote community gatherings and enhance campus life. Notably, the project will also include an ADA-accessible pedestrian bridge that spans 25th Street, conveniently positioned above the FDR Drive.

Preconstruction activities officially kicked off in the fourth quarter of 2024. This phase will involve careful planning and assessment to ensure that the upcoming construction meets both innovative architectural standards and community needs. However, the visible transformation of the site is anticipated to commence with the groundbreaking event, expected by the end of 2025. During this period, Skanska will also complete the deconstruction of outdated structures currently located on the site, a process projected to finish in the first quarter of 2027.

Chris Mckniff, Communications Director at Skanska USA Building, expressed enthusiasm about the project's potential impact on the community and the educational sector. He states, "By revitalizing this area and providing essential resources for education, we hope to foster a rich learning environment that supports both current and future students."

As urban centers increasingly prioritize educational resources, projects like SPARC are crucial in addressing these demands. Skanska, known for its commitment to sustainability and innovative construction techniques, is poised to bring forth a development that not only enriches educational opportunities but also revitalizes the urban landscape of New York City.
