UnionPay International Launches Comprehensive Payment Program for International Students

UnionPay International's New Payment Program for Students

UnionPay International (UPI) has taken a significant step forward by launching a comprehensive payment program specifically catered to international students. In an effort to ease financial transactions for students studying abroad, UPI has formed partnerships with numerous universities, payment platforms, student housing operators, and local banks. This initiative promises to enhance the cross-border payment experience, providing a seamless solution for tuition payments, daily purchases, and local card applications for students in over 183 countries.

As the holiday season comes to a close, many international students and their families are gearing up for the upcoming academic year. According to recent data, there has been a remarkable 17% year-over-year increase in tuition payment volumes during the first half of 2025. UPI is responding to this upward trend by integrating resources to address the growing demand for cross-border payment solutions, aiming to provide cost-effective and hassle-free services.

Through collaborations with international payment platforms such as Flywire, EasyTransfer, Convera (formerly known as Western Union), and PayMyTuition, UPI is widening its reach across thousands of educational institutions globally. The official websites of partnering universities accept UnionPay cards through these platforms, offering students the benefit of real-time exchange rate discounts. Additionally, local partners like CIBC in Canada, BPAY and iEduPay in Australia, PayPlus in New Zealand, and PayZoom in South Korea have expanded their acceptance of UnionPay services.

One of the key components of UPI's initiative is its collaboration with local banks, allowing for the issuance of UnionPay cards in popular destinations for international students, which include Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Spain, and Canada. This development enables students to conveniently apply for a local card upon their arrival. Moreover, student accommodation providers in the UK, like Unite Students and Chapter-living, have integrated UnionPay payment options, alongside well-known local student housing brands in Australia such as Scape, Iglu, and UniLodge, which have also implemented online payment services via UnionPay. Additionally, international apartment operators like Greystar are now part of UnionPay's merchant network, promoting easier payment solutions.

UnionPay’s acceptance reaches an astonishing 183 countries and regions, allowing international students the opportunity to enjoy seamless and secure payment options in various locations. In Hong Kong and Macao, nearly all ATMs and businesses accept UnionPay, including MTR card payments, Octopus recharges via Apple Pay, and popular dining establishments in areas like Lan Kwai Fong. Furthermore, UnionPay cards are usable in numerous cafes, supermarkets, and restaurants near major universities such as HKUST and HKU. In Singapore, universities like NUS, JCU, and NAFA conduct online tuition payments through UnionPay, and it is accepted at almost every ATM and 80% of enterprises throughout the nation for dining and shopping.

Across Europe and the UK, UnionPay is accepted in the majority of ATMs, department stores, cafes, restaurants, and tourist attractions. Prominent universities including the University of Portsmouth, Edinburgh University, University of Sussex, and Imperial College London all facilitate tuition payments on their official sites via UnionPay, utilizing platforms like Flywire and Convera. In Canada, over 500,000 businesses such as TT Supermarket, IKEA, Dollarama, Tim Hortons, and Starbucks support UnionPay transactions. Similarly, in Australia, academic institutions like the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, Monash University, and the University of Queensland use UnionPay for both online and in-store transactions. In New Zealand, universities like the University of Auckland and Victoria University, alongside private schools and language programs, recognize UnionPay, making it available for use in campus shops, libraries, and cafes.

As the landscape of international education continues to evolve, the number of students studying abroad is steadily on the rise. UPI is leveraging its global payment network to ensure that cross-border payments remain safe, simple, and cost-effective. This initiative not only provides a dependable source of student clientele for banks and retailers but also contributes to the growth of local consumer markets. UPI remains open to new partnerships aimed at creating a more secure and convenient payment ecosystem for international students.
