Mississippi Launches First Data Center Workforce Training Program

In a notable development for Mississippi, Compass Datacenters has teamed up with Meridian Community College (MCC) to introduce the state's first Mechanical, Electrical and Information Technology (MEI) Data Center Pathway Program. This initiative underscores a significant push towards building a skilled workforce capable of supporting a burgeoning digital infrastructure investment that could reach up to $10 billion in Meridian.

The MEI Data Center Pathway Program

The MEI pathway program is designed as a hands-on training initiative that equips residents with the necessary skills to thrive in high-demand careers within the rapidly growing data center industry. The program spans 14 weeks and caters to individuals without previous degrees or experience, effectively lowering barriers to entry in this competitive field. Graduates will emerge with practical experience, ready to fill roles in mechanical, electrical, and information technology operations.

With the demand for skilled technicians in the data center sector expected to grow, estimates suggest a recurring shortfall of more than 500,000 skilled trade professionals annually across the nation. In Mississippi, the urgency for workforce development is heightened by competing industrial projects that demand local talent. This program is poised to address that gap, giving residents a pathway to stable, good-paying jobs that build lasting careers.

Community Collaboration and Support

The program's launch is marked by the involvement of ten industry partners including RK Industries, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Vertiv, and others, who are actively supporting the inaugural cohort at MCC. This collaborative approach not only amplifies the program's reach but also reinforces the connection between education and local industry needs.

On July 31 and August 1, MCC will host a career fair at its Riley Workforce Development Center, providing a platform for students to explore employment opportunities matching their newly acquired skills. This event aligns with the goal of fostering a robust local talent pipeline tailored for the digital economy.
