Groundbreaking Hybrid-Electric Aircraft Demonstrations Set for Norway in 2027
Norway's Hybrid-Electric Aircraft Demonstrations in 2027
In an exciting move towards a more sustainable future in aviation, five sites across Norway have been selected to conduct demonstration flights of Electra's hybrid-electric aircraft in 2027. The initiative is a collaboration between the Bristow Group, Electra, Avinor, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Norway (CAA Norway). This project aims to evaluate the operational, regulatory, and market aspects necessary for the successful introduction of hybrid-electric aircraft within the aviation ecosystem.
The Hybrid-Electric EL2 Technology
The demonstrations will showcase the powerful capabilities of the Electra EL2 hybrid-electric aircraft, which can take off and land in approximately 50 meters. This innovative aircraft integrates electric propulsion with a turbogenerator powered by sustainable aviation fuel, aiming to significantly reduce emissions in aviation operations. Such advancements represent a substantial step toward cleaner and more efficient air travel.
Selected Sites for Demonstration
The five chosen locations incorporate a diverse range of environments, which will be instrumental in assessing the aircraft's performance under various conditions:
1. Horvnes Quay - Located near Sandnessjøen, this site will serve as a novel landing zone, where traditional runways are absent.
2. Kongsbergporten Business Park - Another innovative site aimed at demonstrating operations outside of conventional aviation hubs.
3. Trondheim Airport - A larger aviation hub providing extensive integration opportunities with existing operations.
4. Oslo Airport - This major airport will facilitate the evaluation of the hybrid-electric aircraft in a bustling operational environment.
5. Mosjøen Airport - Chosen for its short runway, this venue will provide insights into the aircraft's capabilities and new approach procedures relevant to short-runway operations.
Insights and Future Planning
Karianne Helland Strand, Executive Vice President of Sustainability and Infrastructure at Avinor, emphasizes the need to test this technology across different environments to glean vital insights into necessary infrastructure, airspace, and regulatory adjustments required for the introduction of new aircraft types in Norway. The diverse testing environments aim to illustrate how the hybrid-electric aircraft can operate flexibly and safely within the current air traffic systems.
Dave Stepanek, Executive Vice President and Chief Transformation Officer at Bristow, adds that this demonstrates Electra's ultra-short takeoff and landing capabilities, showcasing operational flexibility across various regions. This series of test flights not only provides crucial operational data but serves as groundwork for establishing a Direct Aviation ecosystem connecting communities more seamlessly without relying on traditional runways.
Regulatory Considerations
Jan Petter Steinland, Director of Innovation, Research, and Sustainability at CAA Norway, highlights that such comprehensive testing will inform whether existing regulations appropriately accommodate new aircraft technologies. This inquiry into the aircraft's specific characteristics will aid in safely integrating them into current aviation operations.
Next Steps
The project is entering a pivotal phase as partners focus on designing the detailed test program, securing necessary approvals, and preparing the selected locations for the anticipated demonstrations. The first demonstration flight is scheduled for the third quarter of 2027.
