Local Disability Advocate Takes Charge in San Francisco
Eli Gelardin, after nearly two decades as the CEO of the Marin Center for Independent Living (Marin CIL), is set to embark on a new journey as the head of the Mayor's Office on Disability in San Francisco. His extensive experience and personal commitment to disability rights promise to shape the future of accessibility in the city.
Gelardin has been a steadfast advocate for the disability community, making substantial strides in the realm of access and equity. During his tenure at Marin CIL, he co-founded vital initiatives such as Marin’s One Door Aging and Disability Resource Connection (ADRC) and the Marin Aging and Disability Institute (MADI), leading a transformative merger that created a regional organization focused on disability rights across Marin, Solano, Sonoma, and Napa counties.
"It's truly been an honor to work with a community that celebrates disabled joy and values lived experiences," Gelardin remarked. "Our endeavors have always extended beyond mere services; we aim to construct a world where lives of disabled individuals are genuinely appreciated and valued."
Having lived in Marin since 1985, Gelardin's connection to the disability rights movement blossomed at UC Berkeley. Joining Marin CIL in 2003, he ascended to the position of Executive Director in 2008. His advocacy has been influenced by his personal life, as he embraces his role as a co-parent to children with multiple disabilities.
In his new role in San Francisco, Gelardin will oversee the enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) within city departments. His focus will be on crucial sectors, including housing, transportation, and digital communications, ensuring that accessibility is a priority.
Lee Uniacke, Chair of the Marin CIL Board, expressed admiration for Gelardin’s leadership, stating, "Eli has ensured that our community has representation in every important state and regional coalition. His natural leadership skills have fostered enjoyable collaboration among all stakeholders."
As the organization looks for Gelardin's successor, Deputy Director Susan Malardino will serve as the Interim Executive Director of Marin CIL. With an impressive 30 years of experience supporting the organization's peer-led independent living model, she is poised to lead during this transitional period.
