Revamping Public Restrooms: The UFB DUAL® Implementation by JR Kyushu
In a commendable initiative aimed at upgrading the restroom facilities at its stations, JR Kyushu has launched the
'Koi Suru Toilet Project' in collaboration with
Water Design World Co., Ltd. Based in Sumida, Tokyo, this company specializes in producing the
UFB DUAL®, a nozzle designed to generate platinum nanobubbles, which is expected to significantly improve toilet hygiene and cleaning efficacy.
What is UFB DUAL®?
The UFB DUAL® generates ultra-fine bubbles measuring less than 1 micron, commonly referred to as nanobubbles or ultrafine bubbles. These innovative bubbles are pivotal in cleaning, harnessing the natural cleaning properties of water to keep public restrooms continuously clean and minimize the need for frequent manual cleaning.
The Project Rollout
The first phase of UFB DUAL® installation involves four major stations, with completion scheduled between August and December 2025:
- - Minami-Fukuoka Station - Completion by August 2025
- - Onojo Station - Completion by August 2025
- - Kyudai gakkentoshi Station - Completion by December 2025
- - Chikuzenmaebaru Station - Completion by December 2025
Installation Details
At Minami-Fukuoka Station, the UFB DUAL® has been integrated into the water supply system, ensuring that the entire station benefits from the platinum nanobubbles. Similarly, at Onojo Station, the installation has also been completed, significantly enhancing the sanitary conditions of the restrooms. The implementation at both Kyudai gakkentoshi and Chikuzenmaebaru is set to advance these enhancements further.
Prior Success with Trials
Before proceeding with the widespread implementation, two pilot tests were conducted at
Minami Kurume Station and
Hizen Fukuro Station in October 2024. The results were promising; within a month, both trials demonstrated that the UFB DUAL® significantly reduced dirt and grime through water alone.
- - At Hizen Fukuro Station, the visible filth atop urinals diminished considerably, while the general level of sediment on toilets remarkably decreased.
- - At Minami Kurume Station, it was observed that stains and marks around toilet fixtures and sinks had cleaned up notably.
Transitioning to Full-Scale Implementation
The successful trial outcomes reinforced JR Kyushu’s commitment to enhance restroom cleanliness. The unique capabilities of UFB DUAL® correlate perfectly with JR Kyushu’s initiative to make cleaning easier and more effective, using just the power of water.
Scientific Superiority of UFB DUAL®
UFB DUAL® isn’t just effective; it’s scientifically advanced. It produces platinum nanobubbles averaging between 0.1 to 0.2 micrometers, which not only makes dirt easier to detach but also employs a novel electrostatic mechanism. The negatively charged bubbles attract positively charged dirt particles, facilitating their removal via water flow.
Success Stories: In collaboration with JR East, tests showed that UFB DUAL® could remove uric scale that had built up over 35 years from toilet drainage systems, establishing its efficacy in maintenance. Additionally, findings from studies in partnership with
Gunma University revealed a 30-fold reduction in biofilm formation compared to regular tap water over 48 hours, showcasing a significant antimicrobial effect.
Unique Technology and Reliability
Utilizing a highly efficient cavitation method, UFB DUAL® successfully generates platinum nanobubbles with less than a 4% reduction in water flow and pressure. The product has passed rigorous Japanese safety regulations and utilizes materials compliant with RoHS directives. Moreover, the UFB DUAL® has received accolades, including the
Good Design Award in 2024, affirming its practical and aesthetic considerations.
Looking Ahead
Water Design World aims to strengthen its partnership with JR Kyushu following this pivotal project and is excited about expanding its innovative solutions to more stations and establishments, contributing further to hygienic environments in public facilities.
