Support for Senior Researchers at Okayama University



On April 17, 2026, Okayama University announced a significant milestone during a regular press conference held by President Tomoyuki Nasu. The university launched the first phase of the "Okayama University Senior-Mid Career Researcher Support Package," which includes the creation of two new titles: "Distinguished Professor" and "Honorary Professor." This initiative is groundbreaking in Japan, extending the retirement age for professors from 65 to 75 years old, enabling them to continue their research activities actively.

Previously, Okayama University had established comprehensive support systems primarily aimed at young researchers, known as the "Okayama University Young Researcher Development Support Package." Launched in 2018, the research professor program incentivizes young scholars with excellent research achievements by allowing them to assume the role of independent research leaders (Principal Investigators) and providing them with necessary funding and support. Additionally, since April 2020, an Associate Research Professor system has been available for lecturers and assistant professors, fostering independent research pursuits for early-career academics.

Despite these efforts, there was no specific support structure in place for professors. The new initiatives seek to fill this gap by presenting a pathway for established researchers with significant academic contributions to obtain the titles of Distinguished Professor for a term of two years and Honorary Professor following successful three-time renewals of the Distinguished Professor designation over a six-year timeframe.

The Distinguished Professorship comes with several advantages, such as indirect funding incentives and reduced administrative burdens. Achieving the status of Honorary Professor not only extends the retirement eligibility but also allows professors to continue receiving their current salaries and maintain their research laboratories.

Vice President Hisanori Sato, who oversees research and industry-academia collaboration, remarked on the design of these systems, emphasizing the need for feedback from various stakeholders, including young researchers. He stated, "With an increasing number of mid-career professors, a support framework that encompasses all ages of researchers is essential for fostering academic growth. Okayama University is committed to continuing its pursuit of new challenges and transformations as a research institution that provides comprehensive support throughout all research stages."

This initiative aligns with Okayama University's ongoing commitment as part of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's project to strengthen research universities with distinctive regional characteristics (J-PEAKS).

Further elaborating on the importance of the new system, President Nasu noted that as researchers age, the acceleration of their careers tends to increase rapidly. He stated that young researchers quickly transition to mid-career and then senior positions. Therefore, the new framework aims to ensure a seamless evolution of careers for young researchers, offering more clarity and appeal in their academic journeys as they progress.

While currently only a couple of individuals in the sciences qualify for the Honorary Professor title, the university aims to elevate this number through robust support for senior and mid-career researchers. Okayama University remains dedicated to its long-term vision (2050), aspiring to construct a creative research university capable of contributing to both local and global challenges.
