Embracing Light in a Chaotic Era

The newly unveiled Tosaiga art pieces are themed around the concept of the "Inner Sun," a reflection of our individual inner light amidst the chaos of the times. This initiative aims to delve into the sources of creativity and rebirth.

Featured Artwork: "Kōn"

One of the standout creations, the Tosaiga piece "Kōn," reflects a narrative drawn from Zhuangzi's writings—where the legendary fish Kōn transforms into the majestic bird Peng, symbolizing inherent change and infinite potential within every being. Kusaba's artistry captures this essence, urging us to break away from narrow values and embrace the raw power of life.

Upon closer inspection of "Kōn," vibrant patterns represent the continuous cycles of life, suggesting a deeper understanding of existence as guided by celestial principles. This piece embodies the culmination of Kusaba's hard work, showcasing the breathtaking beauty derived from an intricate creation process. The use of unique techniques allows the colors to shift dramatically based on viewing angle, heightening the visual experience.

Another Masterpiece: "Rainbow Tara"

Similarly inspired by the theme of the "Inner Sun," Kusaba introduces the piece "Rainbow Tara." This work draws inspiration from Buddhist symbolisms of compassion, encapsulated in a rainbow-embraced Bodhisattva. The vivid hues represent the spectrum of emotions, echoing the notion that each person inherently embodies brilliance. Adorned with pure gold motifs, including a radiant halo reminiscent of the sun and lotus designs representing rebirth, this artwork deepens the exploration of inner light.

Alongside the new pieces, the exhibition will also feature popular past works and related merchandise available for purchase. Don't forget to grab the available 2026 calendar showcasing pieces like the "Four Divine Beasts."

What is Tosaiga?

Tosaiga, a unique genre developed by Kazuhisa Kusaba, transcends traditional Arita ware techniques. After over 30 years of rigorous research and experimentation, Kusaba's Tosaiga is distinguished by its remarkable palette and the transformative interplay of light, resulting from multiple firings that can exceed 15 cycles. This technique establishes astonishing colors that embody life’s vibrancy.

From meticulous painting on ceramics to precise adjustments in kiln temperatures, each creation encapsulates an unwavering commitment to artistic integrity. Once placed in the kiln, the artist entrusts the outcome to fire, often resulting in pieces that outshine even the creator's imagination.
