About 'Sumidagawa'

Written by Kanze Motomasa, the play 'Sumidagawa' explores profound themes of life and death. Often described as a Noh that evokes tears, this production seeks to emphasize Motomasa's poignant phrase 'the ties of death.' The narrative revolves around a mother's heart-wrenching search for her lost son, culminating in a fleeting encounter that raises questions of salvation and despair. Tomoeda expresses his desire for the audience to connect deeply with this emotional storyline, drawing upon his own experiences in the role of the child actor.

Unique Directorial Choices

In an intriguing directorial choice, Tomoeda aims to portray the character of the child, Umegawamaru, as being younger than traditionally depicted. Instead of a twelve-year-old, audiences will experience the pathos of a seven to eight-year-old child, enhancing the emotional depth of Umegawamaru’s plight. Tomoeda is eager to explore the complexities surrounding Motomasa’s and Zeami’s differing perspectives on child actors, leaving the interpretation of the child's presence open for audience perception.

As he prepares to perform 'the ties of death,' Tomoeda reflects on his life, hoping to leave a lasting impression on those who attend.
