Celebrating 20 Years of Wonder Donation: MetLife's Commitment to Social Contribution

MetLife Japan: A Commitment to Social Responsibility

MetLife Life Insurance, under the leadership of CEO Dirk Osteen, celebrates the 20th anniversary of its social contribution program, Wonder Donation. Over its two-decade history, this initiative has raised a remarkable 620 million yen, showcasing the company’s dedication to social responsibility.

Wonder Donation was launched in December 2006, with collaboration from MetLife's sales personnel and insurance agents nationwide. The program operates on a straightforward yet impactful model: for every new insurance contract signed, either a MetLife sales representative or agent contributes the equivalent of 50 cents. MetLife then matches this contribution, creating a fund that is donated to organizations addressing various societal challenges.

In the fiscal year 2025, MetLife mobilized an impressive workforce, with 2,340 sales employees and 2,490 insurance agencies contributing 20,615,10 yen to four charitable organizations:
  • - Make-A-Wish Japan Foundation (supporting children with severe illnesses)
  • - Japan Guide Dog Association (supporting the training of guide dogs)
  • - Cancer Research Institute (advancing cancer research and improving treatment environments)
  • - Living in Peace (supporting academic opportunities for former residents of child welfare facilities)

Dirk Osteen expressed his pride in the program during a donation ceremony held on August 19, 2026: "I am extremely delighted and proud to announce that Wonder Donation has surpassed 600 million yen in total contributions. This achievement is a testament to the strong commitment of our agents, employees, and the partnered organizations tackling social issues. Together, we will continue to work towards a brighter future and a better society."

The Impact of the Organizations Supported

The contributions from the Wonder Donation program have made significant impacts on the organizations it supports.

Make-A-Wish Japan

Founded in 1980 in Arizona, Make-A-Wish is the world’s largest wish-granting organization for children with critical illnesses. The Japan branch, established in December 1992, strives to fulfill the dreams of sick children and provide them with both financial and emotional support during their challenging times. This organization aims to instill courage and joy in children facing arduous health battles.

Japan Guide Dog Association

Operating since April 1995 and recognized as a nonprofit organization in June 2008, the Japan Guide Dog Association is committed to the breeding and training of guide dogs, assisting visually impaired individuals' independence and social participation. Supported by multiple guide dog training facilities across Japan, they work collaboratively to enhance the development and promotion of guide dogs, aiming to improve the lives of those they serve.

Cancer Research Institute

Founded in 1908, the Cancer Research Institute is Japan's first specialized institution dedicated to cancer treatment and research. It has significantly influenced both treatment practices and the advancement of cancer research. With recent technological advancements, including the introduction of modern surgical robots, the institute continues to push boundaries to provide less invasive and more effective cancer treatments.

Living in Peace

Living in Peace is dedicated to reducing poverty through equal opportunities and has developed a Children’s Project focusing on supporting career development and providing scholarships for former residents of child welfare facilities. By creating community hubs around initiatives like children’s cafeterias, Living in Peace aims to offer comprehensive support to children and foster family systems.

MetLife's Ongoing Commitment

MetLife Japan, established in 1973 as the first foreign life insurance company in the country, continues to uphold its commitment to providing optimal security to individuals and corporations alike. With a focus on innovative products that cater to a diverse array of risks, MetLife remains a trusted partner for its customers.
