Experience Martin Margiela's First Major Exhibition in Japan at Kudana House

Unveiling Martin Margiela's First Major Exhibition in Japan

From April 11 to April 29, 2026, the renowned Belgian designer and artist Martin Margiela will showcase his first significant exhibition, "MARTIN MARGIELA AT KUDAN HOUSE," in Japan. Set within the historical and registered tangible cultural property known as Kudana House, this exhibition promises a unique blend of modern art and cultural heritage, creating a captivating contrast that Margiela has expressed a keen interest in.

A Unique Venue for a Timeless Art Experience

Kudana House, completed in 1927, is a stunning example of Spanish-style architecture transformed into a members-only business innovation hub. Known as the former residence of the Yamaguchi family, this venue not only holds historical significance but also preserves an intimate atmosphere that resonates with Margiela's artistic vision. Throughout the exhibition, visitors will traverse the various rooms of the house, engaging directly with Margiela's works, which will be presented as ephemeral installations scattered throughout the space.

Margiela's exploration of themes such as reuse, decomposition, and transformation remains at the forefront of his artistry. The human body continues to serve as a vital source of inspiration for his work, wherein everyday objects and overlooked circumstances are observed and then elevated to extraordinary statuses. At this exhibition, attendees can expect a diverse array of artistic techniques on display, including collage, painting, drawing, sculpture, assemblage, and video works. Each piece is not just placed within the house but interacts harmoniously with the residence's history and atmosphere, reflecting Margiela's personal aesthetic.

A Message from Martin Margiela

Margiela himself states, “Anonymity is essential for protecting the privacy that allows my creative freedom. My obsession with the same interests as in the days of fashion persists, but the human body is no longer my sole medium of expression.” With a commitment to craftsmanship, he aims to showcase the process behind his work, emphasizing the beauty found in imperfection and unfinished pieces. Margiela articulates his desire to provoke questions rather than provide answers, inviting viewers to engage with his art critically.

Exhibiting in a Historic Home

The exhibition venue, Kudana House, has been remodeled to evoke a private family residence, which Margiela chose specifically to revive its intimate atmosphere. The artist himself has expressed a strong resonance with the house's character and ambiance. In the year 2000, he opened the world's first "Maison Martin Margiela" store in a historical house in Ebisu, Tokyo, featuring a collection displayed throughout the entire home, including bathrooms and kitchens. After a span of 25 years, Margiela returns to Tokyo to showcase his work again in another historical setting.

“I am thrilled to be back in Tokyo and to exhibit my work in this house built in 1927. Just as with my previous exhibition, I hope visitors will encounter my pieces in the intimate spaces of each room and feel a sense of wonder,” Margiela shares enthusiastically.
