Akimu Tsukue's Exhibition at YUGEN Gallery FUKUOKA
One of Japan's most intriguing artists,
Akimu Tsukue, will unveil his first solo exhibition in
Kyushu at the
YUGEN Gallery FUKUOKA on
November 15, 2025. This exhibition, titled
“Art Room Ghost,” promises to be a captivating showcase of his unique artistic vision that transcends cultural boundaries.
Having started his career as a
manga artist and illustrator after winning the prestigious
Second Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shimbun Manga Award in 2012, Tsukue has since gained significant recognition in the art world. His works blend
painting and collage, creating captivating flat and semi-three-dimensional pieces that evoke a sense of an otherworldly aesthetic.
Tsukue's distinctive style, filled with an international flavor but anchored in a space that feels ‘nowhere,’ has led him to hold numerous exhibitions not just in Japan but in cities like
Seoul,
Hong Kong,
Shenzhen, and
Taipei. He has also been invited to several international art fairs, enhancing his reputation on global platforms.
The
“Art Room Ghost” exhibition marks an important return to Tsukue's artistic roots. He reflects on the concept of
“art class ghosts,” where he imagines himself working alone in an elementary school art room, unaware that those around him have moved on. His exploration is driven not by feelings of loneliness or anxiety but by the pure joy of creation. Tsukue aims to revisit the foundations of creativity and embrace a new approach using everyday materials.
During the exhibition, visitors can expect to witness a reinvention of everyday experiences through Tsukue's artistic lens.
“Friends have graduated, teachers have retired, and even the school has closed, but I continue creating in that empty art room,” Tsukue has stated, encapsulating the essence of his creative journey.
Set in the beautiful venue of
YUGEN Gallery, located in
Fukuoka's Chuo Ward, this exhibition is particularly significant as it brings contemporary artistry back to the region after a two-year hiatus for Tsukue. The gallery, established in
February 2022, prides itself on showcasing contemporary Japanese art, promoting talented emerging artists, and providing a platform for diverse works that defy categorization.

joy in creation is a theme that resonates deeply, promising an enriching experience for art enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
