The Mythical World of Matsusho Sai Tenkatsu
In a remarkable event set to unfold from October 9 to October 11, 2026, at Asakusa Nine Theatre in Tokyo, the magic and legacy of the renowned female magician Matsusho Sai Tenkatsu will be vividly brought back to life. Under the direction of Shibuya Shun and his innovative troupe, Shinbi Box, this performance titled 'Tenka Keru Kokoro -- The Story of Matsusho Sai Tenkatsu' promises to be a breathtaking exploration of magic that transcends time.
Matsusho Sai Tenkatsu, often celebrated as the 'Magic Queen,' played a pivotal role in the evolution of Japanese magic between the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras. Her enchanting performances incorporated various art forms like dance, theater, and live music, making her an unrivaled name in Japan's showbiz landscape. However, following her retirement, magic-themed stage performances gradually diminished in Japan, almost vanishing from the entertainment scene.
The Inspiring Journey of Shibuya Shun
Contrastingly, Shibuya Shun, a young magician and visionary, has been actively reshaping the landscape since his teenage years by integrating dance into his magic performances and crafting theatrical narratives. With a passion for innovation, he established the performance unit 'Shinbi Box' in 2024, aiming to explore new frontiers in magic. Collaborating with renowned director Kan Mamoru, famous for his contributions to Japan's underground theater, Shun has woven charming tales that draw inspiration from globally beloved fairy tales into a mesmerizing realm of possibilities.
For this performance, the show will intricately weave together the life and influences of Matsusho Sai Tenkatsu through engaging theater, captivating dance, and stunning magic. Audience members can anticipate a revival of the classic magic tricks that Tenkatsu excelled in, as historical documents will guide this unique reenactment of her extraordinary feats.
The philosophy behind this project is to elevate magic as an art form accessible to everyone, irrespective of nationality, gender, or age, while reigniting a vibrant entertainment culture in Japan. As they take on this new challenge, Shibuya and his team aim to breathe life into an exhilarating experience that resonates across generations.
Shibuya Shun: A Rising Star
Born on May 12, 1998, Shibuya Shun found his passion for magic at the tender age of 5 and debuted on stage as a child. As an 11-year-old, he ventured into dance, making significant appearances in various television shows and large-scale fashion events. He seamlessly blended dance with magic, creating a signature style that has earned him accolades in numerous international competitions.
Notably, in 2014, he became the youngest Japanese magician to perform for a week at the prestigious Magic Castle in Hollywood, marking a milestone in his career. His relentless pursuit of new magic expressions has led to a variety of performances, including solo tours and theatrical shows. In recognition of his talents, he received the Hope Award from the Japan Magic Association in 2018.
Currently, Shun is broadening his artistic spectrum by taking on roles in theatrical productions and TV commercials, enchanting audiences with his delicate yet dynamic performances.
