Matsunaga, the main character, finds himself receiving treatment for a gunshot wound at Sanada's clinic, where the latter, despite his flaws, exemplifies compassion and skill.

As the narrative unfolds, Matsunaga's deteriorating health juxtaposed with his chaotic surroundings reflects the emotional and societal turmoil of post-war Japan. His relationships with those around him, including his childhood friend Gin, and the dancer Nanae, bring an intimate focus to the broader themes of loss and survival.
